Kamar Taj [2008]

–Jamie Bell–

“Sooo, you’re moving.” The first thing that happened when he showed up at his office today was an urgent meeting with the HR, who was quite accepting of his whole midlife crisis fueled misfire adventure but was decidedly concerned when asked about his future plans.

“Yes,” He nodded, still covered in bandages, but still in what he hoped looked like appropriate office wear. Well, not like anyone was going to stop him anywhere when he was walking with a freaking cane of all things.

“Out of the country?”

With the right context, he might even look like a classic Bond Villain. Well, a defeated one anyway.

“...Yes.”

“....Because we can still offer you your old job back. In fact, we can get you paid for all that time if you just agree to come back,” She made her pitch and honestly, to the Jamie of last month, that would have been a phenomenal offer, because it meant getting weeks worth of extra paid vacation, without any risk but alas…

He shook his head, “No, thank you. I just...I don’t think this is what I want to do with the rest of my life. So, yeah, this is my resignation. I’m just here to get my stuff.” He slid forward a small envelope, with some fake difficulty.

The HR lady sighed, “Look, ultimately it’s your decision. I just hope you are not falling into some trap because, at your age, career changes are very rare. I hope you know what you are doing.”

Ah, there came the implied threat. He shrugged, the implication falling off his shoulders as he now knew people who could set him up for life, without even factoring in the abilities he would get from Kamar Taj, some that would allow him to set up a hermit life set up in most parts of the world.

After all, transport was taken care of, and free. Water and Food could be foraged and he knew that Water filtration spells and enchantments exist so to be honest, he could live in any part of the world.

“Alright then, as you wish.” The HR lady said as she stood up to shake his hand and then gestured to the door, “Tracy will help you with your stuff. Thank you for your service. We at Goliath National Bank have been grateful to have you with us for a long time.”

With that ceremonial send off done, he was then escorted by a younger and far prettier Tracy to the archive section, which was right next to his department, and was then handed a box full of his stuff or atleast, she tried to and failed, because of his injuries.

So, after a second of awkward maneuvering, Tracy apparently decided that escorting him back to his car was the best option, after all.

“Thank you, Tracy,” He thanked the young woman who just waved at him and left, which was kind of rude but not a problem for him because he was finally rid of his job. It was done, the biggest string holding him tight to normalcy was gone. Honestly, if he had a tonne of free time on his hand, and no mentally stimulating job or something, he would have long since done something really stupid with his powers, resulting in him getting vivisected or something.

With a sigh, he closed the door and entered the driver’s seat, thinking of where to go next, after lunch ofcourse.

Midway through though, he gave up on that plan and went straight home. He did not really need to go through all the motions to sell his fake injury because, as sad as it sounded, nobody really cared for him anyway so might as well do the bare minimum and move on.

HE entered his home and after reheating the leftovers, plopped his ass on the sofa and began looking at TV, where in his mind was actually meditating, and absorbing the DImension Energy all around him. It was quite neat as well, because it elicited no visible reaction and he was getting better at it day by day.

Earlier it used to require his full attention and a clear mind, but now, he could do it with his eyes open, as long as it was still his primary focus, which was much better than it was before. It meant he could do it while doing his chores, while cleaning, and the majority of his time because let’s face it, he was not going to go back to a boring old day job where he had to be mentally awake for his work.

He took the first step and then jumped into the swamp that was Sorcerery and the world of KAmar Taj. There was no going back now. All that was left was making sure that the car was sold, he had no need for it now, and to mothball the entire house. The tenants were fine and he might need the little cash he got from them, to pay for the taxes on the property and any other maintenance as well as administrative fees but overall, he was done now.

That single thought relaxed something in him as he leaned further back into the sofa, feeling the crappy cushion instantly but for once, it did not annoy him.

[The next day]

“Thank you for this, really. I will be in touch, and please deposit the checks regularly as I will be away. Yes, thank you. Bye!” He waved goodbye at the tenants, as the Uber drove off. He was going to make it all look legit.

Putting on his sunglasses, which must have been very painful to look at because he had to do that with one hand, he said, “Thailand! Here I come!”

The Uber driver gave him a look but shook his head and continued to drive towards the airport. He had a flight to catch, to the land of cheap hookers and even cheaper booze, where middle aged white men like him flocked en masse for some services, shady as they might be.

Well, not him though.

He grinned as he remembered the face Master Wong made when he told him of his plan to move to Thailand. That disappointed stare. Ouch. He could still feel it. The reasoning given from his side fell on deaf ears as Master Wong maintained his signature disappointed guardian stare.

“Hey! It’s not like that! Look, it’s perfect when you think about it. Many people my age go there, for understandably shady reasons but they do! It will look just like any normal thing that a middle aged single man would do.”

He chuckled at the disgusted face, as if he would do something like that.

Continuing his staring out the window which was oddly satisfying, he continued to absorb Dimensional Energy. At this point, he had enough energy for him to sustain a portal large enough to fit him for hours on end.

Portals took a lot of energy, not from the Sorcerers but from the infinite well of energy around them. Since he needed to draw on his personal reserves if he wanted the best results, he had to ration the use of portals, else it would drain his reserves quite rapidly.

As he continued to fill in that container with the magical energy, his gaze fell on the arrow shaped tattoo on his wrist.

The Chi Reaper, they called it. A relic of his own, something that he was not supposed to get until he was worthy of being called a Master of the Mystic Arts. It was apparently not even on the list of relics that could be safely handed out.

It made sense to give him this particular one though. The one thing he had in spades was lifeforce or Chi, so while this thing could drain a human dry of their life force within minutes of high intensity combat, an hour if they were a Master and had high reserves of lifeforce, it was nothing to him who had taken droves of Chi from giant Trees with bottomless reserves of lifeforce.

He was really looking forward to experimenting with draining lifeforce from other entities as well, though cognizant of the fact that doing so repeatedly might make Kamar Taj tag him as a rogue Sorcerer, which would just end up in him being dead or imprisoned.

However, controlled experiments with senior supervision should be fine.

This tattoo, when channeled Chi into, would up all his physical stats exponentially. Basically, the stronger he got, the bigger the boost he would get after pumping in Chi through this thing. Else, all he could do with Chi on his own was a little bit of healing, nothing more.

The car came to a halt as his concentration was broken and the flow of DImensional Energy was stopped. Slinging on his backpack since he had decided to travel light and stashed away the rest of his luggage in the attic, where he would recover after he was settled, he paid for the Uber and walked towards the Airport entrance.

Life….was looking good, for once.
