Training Hell, Kamar Taj [2009]

–Jamie Bell–

“Again!” He just roared in reply, jumping back into the fray, using his personal reserves of Dimensional Energy to create tiny legs that pushed him forward, then switching to universal Dimensional Energy to create the Captain’s shield, but this time, instead of the star, it had a sharp pointed rod at the end of it.

Pouring Chi into the Chi Reaper, he enhanced his strength and slammed the shield down on the ground, Mordo leaping away from the point of impact as the ground imploded on itself, sending chunks of rubble everywhere.

Switching to his personal reserves once more, he pushed himself from the point of impact, heading straight to where he could sense Mordo to be, then switching to Universal Dimensional Energy once more, he roared and brought down his shield, and this time, he used his personal reserves to create an extension of sorts, allowing his shield, which by now was functioning as a hammer, to extend and land right on top of a very surprised Mordo.

He grinned as he felt the impact of his shield, and then he leaned to the side to avoid the Staff of the Living Tribunal, using personal stores of Dimensional Energy to casually cast a shield on the side of his body that withstood the whip strike of Mordo’s weapon as he pumped more Chi into the Chi reaper and pushed down harder, and was rewarded with a pained grunt as a dull thud was felt all over the training ground. Mordo….was finally on his knees but apparently not entirely defeated yet.

Another blunt force strike was headed his way but it was shielded by his full body shield made up solely of Personal Dimensional Energy stores, proving to be impossible for Mordo to pierce through, especially with most of his strength going into blocking the hammer that he had placed on the man.

“Yield!” He shouted, pushing further, as the man’s back was starting to bend now and he was getting worried. He did not wish to push the man any further but he liked to think that he was entitled to a win, at least once in all the time he had spent sparring with this man.

“That’s enough!” He heard Wong shout from the side, as he instantly dispelled everything but his personal shield and lept back, avoiding the whip that instantly struck his previous position. Getting back in position to defend himself, he paused and then relaxed as Wong was standing in between them, “Jamie wins!”

Mordo huffed, shook his hands, shot him a somewhat disbelieving look, and then turned away, hobbling away. He spotted the Ancient One watching the whole thing from the sides, which were elevated from the training platform.

Dispelling everything, he lightly jumped from the ground, and landed right beside the Ancient One, “I don’t think Mordo likes me very much.”

“I don’t think Master Mordo likes anyone very much, let alone someone who so very easily defeated him.” She remarked as Wong activated the sparring ring enchantments, allowing it to heal slowly on its own. It was a very ancient and powerful mechanism, allowing Masters to go all out without fearing damage to their surroundings.

It was slowed down by the amount of Dark Spells cast on it but since it was purely a spar, it should be done within an hour or so.

“I wouldn’t say I defeated him easily. I just didn't give him breathing room to cast spells.”

“But you forget that Master Mordo’s biggest strength is his ability to manipulate the Staff of the Living Tribunal as if it were an extension of his body. Your ability to defeat him has earned you, at least in terms of combat ability, the designation of a Master.”

“Okay but I am sensing a but in there.”

She smiled a bit as she continued, “But for you to become a Master, you would have to prove yourself in the eyes of Kamar Taj. You need to perform a meaningful contribution to Kamar Taj or to Earth’s defense, and only then, will you be allowed to bear the heavy burden that comes with becoming a Master of the Mystic Arts.”

He nodded, a little confused but getting the gist of it, “I see. I will see what I can do about that.” saying his piece, he turned around and left. He knew full well that aside from some vague directions, the Ancient One never gave anyone anything concrete.

He would have to figure out the last part himself and honestly, it was the right way. After over a year of training, he could finally see that her way was the best. It was never right to spoon feed potential Masters of the Mystic Arts.

Well, he was not one yet but today, he just demonstrated he could defeat one of the top three combatants of Kamar Taj in a straight duel. Not to be confused with a death match, where Mordo would most likely severely injure him because training and powers did not equate with experience and Mordo had tons of it.

“Apprentice Bell,” He stopped as Master Kaecilius, one of the recently christened Master of the Mystic Arts, stood in his path, arms crossed and leaning on the wall, “Can we talk?”

“Sure,” He shrugged, knowing about the dude’s future proclivities but willing to take his word for it, for now since he did not seem to be the sinister dude, uncaring of billions of lives, like he would probably turn into, in the future.

Even if he tried something, he was pretty confident in himself by now. After all, he did not spend more than a year getting beat up by various people, just so he could die to some second rate villain character.

“So, what can I do for you, Master Kaecilius?” He asked the man, as they stood at the edge of one of the ponds in Kamar Taj. Yup, Kumar Taj had ponds, multiple of them, of various sizes and shapes. This was the largest one, and closest to the library.

The man turned to him, his expression intense, “Apprentice Bell, do you believe in Immortality?

Oh, boy. This was not going to go well.

He deflected, “Sure, lots of animals on Earth have biological immortality of sorts. Like a specific Jellyfish that can turn itself back into–”

“No, I am not talking about animals, Apprentice Bell. I am talking about immortality, for humans.” The man interrupted him, clearly caught off guard by the direction he was taking the conversation.

“Hmm, I don’t know but we have seen many magicians who performed pacts with Elder Gods, for such boons, only to be deceived in the end. So, I don’t think that’s a worthwhile phenomenon.”

“You don’t believe that there are immortal humans out there?” KAecilius asked him, leading him up to something.

“Well, there certainly have been long lived humans. There are records in the library, stating how some Masters used Sorcery to maintain peak health for the majority of their lives and used some artifacts to sustain their lives after their natural flames burnt out, but even then, I don’t think anyone has lived for more than  2-300 hundred years, at least not without being turned into a bedridden zombie. What’s your point?” He asked the man straightforward, once he was done showcasing his ignorance, or perceived ignorance.

“Nothing. Come find me when you finally begin seeing with more than just your eyes.” The man then turned around and left, leaving behind an ominous statement.

Oh well, he did not have time to deal with that so he shrugged and jogged back to his living quarters in Kamar Taj.

He was so excited to pack his stuff, he barely was in the room for 2 minutes before he came back, all excited and ready.

“Finally!” He exclaimed as he put on his sling ring, and waved his hands in the air, opening a portal straight to….Bangkok.

Specifically, the luxurious villa that had been assigned to him. He had sworn that the next time he came back to this place, he would have defeated Mordo, and yup, that’s what he did.

All those months of training his powers, figuring out that he could rapidly switch between Internal as well as Universal Dimensional Energy stores. Figuring out that he could use two different energy sources at the same time, and more.

If he compared himself to the horrible simulation of the New York INvasion, he could confidently say that he would be able to save that family, with ease, and then deal with any Chitauri who had the misfortune of meeting him.

That simple acknowledgment felt so good to him, that all he could do when he came back was jump into his bed and just drift away to sleep.

After all, he had earned it.
