Yeah they are obscure but fun, a fake myth that gained traction and grew from there. Perytons are described as winged deer that cast human like shadows and are voracious and feral predators in contrast to their elegant and beautiful appearance. The dnd version keeps the spirit but def monsterfied them more which I feel does lose part of the charm as confusing them for something peaceful and beautiful like a deer before the attack has quite the material for scenes.
