The snoring of the slumbering Runebear filled the air, its deep rumblings vibrating through the ruins.
Step by careful step, Adrian skillfully maneuvered around brittle rocks and fallen debris, mindful of every sound that could potentially disturb the beast. He couldn't help but recall the fate of countless ill-fated characters in movies who met their untimely demise by stepping on a loose branch or tripping over an unseen obstacle.
Sweat trickled down Adrian's brow as he approached the stairway leading to the coveted underground chamber. He knew that any wrong move could awaken the beast and turn his daring heist into a calamity.
But just as he reached the base of the stairway, Adrian's attention wavered for a split second. His gaze shifted from the ground to a peculiar-shaped stone jutting out from the wall, and in that moment of distraction, disaster struck.
With an unfortunate misstep, Adrian's foot grazed a small, brittle rock, sending it tumbling down the stone steps. The sound echoed through the chamber, shattering the serene silence and abruptly ceasing the bear's snoring.
Time seemed to stand still as Adrian froze in place, his eyes widening in realization. The snoring abruptly halted, replaced by a low growl that rumbled from the massive beast.
Adrian's heart raced as he contemplated his next move. The stairway stood mere inches away, the underground chamber beckoning him with the promise of hidden treasures. But the furious growl behind him reminded him of the formidable opponent he faced.
Summoning every ounce of courage and wit, Adrian made a split-second decision. He swiftly descended the stairway, his eyes glued to the chamber at the end of the stairway where his prize awaited.
As he entered the chamber, he instantly spotted a silver chest gleaming in the dim light, its intricate engravings hinting at the treasures within. With cautious hands, Adrian opened the lid, ignoring the baubles and trinkets as he searched for an axe-shaped talisman.
Adrian's efforts soon bore fruit as he found his prize. It was a talisman crafted from a bronze-like metal, radiating an aura of ancient power. The engravings on its surface depicted a fine battle axe.
Stowing the talisman into his inventory, Adrian closed the chest's lid, leaving the golden trinkets behind. However, a sudden movement caught his attention as Adrian left the chamber and climbed back to the surface, causing him to grimace and hide behind the rubble.
The Runebear, now fully awake, rose to its full height, its eyes filled with fury. It swung its mighty, clawed paws, and with every swing, it shattered one of the many ruined walls dotting the area, seemingly in search of an intruder.
Adrian couldn't help but gulp as he imagined what would become of him should the bear's paw strike him instead of the walls. Sweat trickled down his face, and as the bear paused its rampage and sniffed at the air, Adrian internally cursed as it turned to look at him.
With a savage roar, the Runebear charged toward Adrian, its massive form thundering through the ruins. Adrian's heart raced, adrenaline surging through his veins. In a moment of frustration, Adrian succumbed to instinct and unleashed a string of vulgarities.
"Shit, fuck, damn, piss bucket!" he exclaimed, summoning Torrent with a sharp whistle. The spirit steed materialized in a swirl of ethereal mist, and Adrian wasted no time as he swiftly mounted the majestic horse. With a kick of his heels, he urged Torrent into a gallop, the steed's hooves pounding against the worn ground.
As the Runebear closed in, its snarls reverberating through the ruins, Adrian leaned forward, urging Torrent to go faster. The wind whipped through his hair as they raced through the crumbling structures, narrowly dodging debris and obstacles in their path.
Adrian could feel the Runebear's hot breath on his back, its enraged roars echoing in his ears. With each stride, Torrent's powerful legs carried them farther away from the pursuing beast.
In a desperate bid for safety, Adrian veered through a narrow passage, skillfully navigating the ruins. The Runebear, though massive and fearsome, struggled to match the agility and speed of the ethereal steed and unwittingly wedged itself in between two stone walls.
As they burst out of the ruins and into the open, Adrian cast a quick glance over his shoulder. The Runebear, now a distant figure, was still wedged between the rocks, struggling to free itself.
Looking back at the Runebear's form, stuck between the rocks and struggling, Adrian couldn't help but smirk smugly, emboldened by the sight. He took a deep breath, preparing to taunt the creature out of habit. But as the Runebear unleashed a powerful roar and broke free from its temporary entrapment, Adrian's smirk instantly vanished, replaced by an expression of instant regret.
The sight of the enraged Runebear tearing through the ruins with renewed vigor brought the fear of God into Adrian's heart. His smugness instantly dissipated, replaced by a sense of urgency and a yearning to sprout another pair of legs that would carry him away from the enraged creature.
Without wasting a moment, Adrian swiftly turned around, his heart pounding in his chest. With a firm grip on the reins, he urged Torrent to pick up speed once again, the steed responding with a burst of acceleration.
Having narrowly escaped the clutches of the relentless Runebear, Adrian stumbled and leaned against a towering tree, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. Beads of sweat dripped down his forehead, mingling with the dirt and grime that coated his face. In between gasps for air, he muttered to himself, frustration evident in his voice.
"I fucking hate Runebears... no scratch that, I hate everything in this stupid world... fuck you, Miyazaki, you sadistic bastard..." Adrian's words dripped with annoyance and exhaustion, his frustration at the treacherous challenges he constantly faced in this unforgiving realm boiling over.
Gradually, his breathing steadied, and he wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. With a sigh, he turned his attention to surveying the area, taking in the surroundings that had granted him a momentary reprieve from danger.
He found himself in the shade of a majestic tree, its branches reaching skyward as if embracing the heavens. Adrian recognized it as a minor Erdtree, one of the many ancient and mystical trees that graced the Lands Between. The dense foliage surrounding him created a serene atmosphere, punctuated by the vibrant colors of red and yellow flowers scattered across the forest floor.
His gaze shifted to a peculiar sight a short distance away. A fist-sized dung beetle diligently pushed an oversized tumbleweed, navigating its path with determination. Adrian couldn't help but be amused by the sight, a momentary distraction from the dangers that lurked in this world.
Next to the dung beetle, he noticed a basin-like structure, seemingly formed by nature itself. The basin and the dung beetle were the reason Adrian had come here. It was no coincidence that Adrian wound up here.
Despite the chaos of the Runebear's pursuit, Adrian had managed to keep the items he sought to obtain in mind. Though sometimes petty and overly Vulgar, Adrian knew not to lose sight of his objectives.
With a mischievous glint in his eyes, Adrian swiftly closed in on the dung beetle, determined not to let it escape him. Just as the insect scurried away, he made a lightning-fast grab, snatching it up in his hands. The startled beetle struggled in his grasp, its tiny legs futilely attempting to find purchase.
Chuckling to himself, Adrian carefully separated the dung beetle from its oversized tumbleweed companion. With a swift motion, he crushed the tumbleweed under his foot, revealing a small gem hidden within.
The gem shimmered with a white glow, its surface adorned with intricate carvings depicting a man falling rear-first into the ground with his arms and legs splayed in the air, causing the earth to crack and split.
Adrian recognized the gem as the Ground Slam, a skill he deemed beneath his dignity to use. He had already acquired a similar skill that resonated more with his fighting style, but he reasoned that it wouldn't hurt to have this gem as well. After all, one never knew when killing a man with the force of one's arse might prove imperative.
