The plain stretched out, its red dirt contrasting with the sporadic patches of weathered grass that stubbornly clung to life and gigantic decayed roots. The scent of decay hung in the air, mingling with the faint aroma of earth and dried leaves.
Leafless trees stood tall and lifeless, their blackened bark twisted unnaturally. They appeared as skeletal sentinels, branches reaching like bony fingers toward the scarlet-red sky. The absence of foliage only added to the desolation that pervaded the land, casting an eerie shadow over Adrian's path.
As he pressed onward, his gaze fixed ahead, Adrian caught sight of a colossal gargoyle looming in the distance. The creature's scrawny body was held together by an otherworldly wax-like substance, giving it an unsettling appearance. Its legs, like gnarled branches, supported its hunched form. The gargoyle's white hair stood stiff and upright, creating an eerie silhouette against the scarlet backdrop.
Tattered and worn, a pair of large black wings extended from its back, hinting at the creature's former majesty. In its hand, it gripped a massive black-bladed sword-- fearsome and foreboding. It stood as a sentinel, a guardian of the Bestial Sanctum where Gurang, the beast clergyman, resided.
Adrian's heart quickened with caution. He understood that crossing paths with such a formidable foe would be no easy task, and he wanted no part in it, knowing the creature would obliterate his current self. The gargoyle's presence exuded an air of danger, its silent vigilance a warning to any who dared approach.
With a firm grip on the reins, Adrian urged Torrent forward, guiding the steed closer to the imposing figure. As he drew nearer, rustling wings and the soft creak of wax filled the air. The gargoyle's gaze fixated upon him, a silent challenge in its eyes.
Undeterred by the gargoyle's challenge, Adrian urged Torrent forward, the steed's powerful hooves pounding against the scarlet-stained earth. The creature maintained its vigilant stance, its blade held high, until Adrian and his loyal companion galloped past, disappearing into the distance. The gargoyle's posture gradually relaxed, and its sword lowered, acknowledging Adrian's departure.
Relieved to have left the guardian behind, Adrian pressed on, delving deeper into the heart of Caelid. The insidious effects of the scarlet rot became increasingly apparent as the land became marred by decay and corruption. Gigantic clusters of fungal growths and eerie spores littered the once-vibrant landscape, casting an otherworldly pallor over the surroundings.
Amidst this desolation, Adrian's attention shifted to a small golden tree standing alone by the roadside. Its leafless branches reached out like skeletal fingers, basking in the eerie scarlet glow. Adrian approached the tree without hesitation and retrieved a buried treasure—a Golden Seed nestled amidst the roots.
Resuming his journey southeast, Adrian encountered a crossroad that stretched before him. An ancient bridge, weathered by the passage of time but still standing. Its sturdy structure seemed capable of bearing the weight of the world itself.
However, the idea of crossing the bridge never crossed Adrian's mind, for a dragon-like creature was perched at its center, its presence majestic and forbidding. The creature's piercing gaze dared anyone to venture further, warning of the challenges that lay ahead.
Considering his options, Adrian turned his gaze toward the eastern path, which led to a more elevated area. It only took Adrian a moment of brainstorming to realize the latter was the path he needed to tread.
Having activated the dormant Site of Grace at the crossroads, Adrian felt a surge of reassurance and strength as the ancient power coursed through his veins. With renewed vigor, he set forth on the eastern path, guiding Torrent along the road that meandered around a formidable rock formation adjacent to the roundabout.
As he continued along the road, the landscape shifted, the elevated patch of land giving way to a gradual descent toward the south. Adrian's gaze caught sight of movement ahead, and his heart skipped a beat as he spotted a group of small humanoid creatures lurking by the roadside.
Their lean and filthy forms were clad in tattered black rags, their sickly gray skin contrasting starkly with the scarlet-stained surroundings. Despite their short stature, these creatures exuded an air of ferocity and danger,
Adrian knew from his previous encounters in the game underestimating them would be a grave mistake.
Armed with unconventional weapons such as sickles and chained scythes, these creatures were quick and agile, possessing a deceptive strength that belied their size. Adrian's past experience served as a harsh reminder of their formidable nature, as he had fallen victim to their unexpected power while playing the game. With a shake of his head, he resolved not to make the same mistake again.
Urging Torrent forward, Adrian rode past the group of menacing creatures, his grip on his weapon firm and ready. He remained cautious, swiftly cutting down any of them that dared to lunge at him, ensuring his own safety as he continued along the road leading south.
"Persistent little fuckers... I fucking hate Caelid..." With a muttered curse escaping his lips, Adrian spurred Torrent forward, the steed galloping faster as they made their way along the road. Glancing over his shoulder, Adrian saw the relentless creatures giving chase, their menacing presence closing in.
But Adrian's attention quickly shifted ahead as his keen eyes caught sight of unusual growths lining the road—a series of black, plant-like objects emitting a sickly green mist. A grin of mischief played on Adrian's lips as he realized the potential advantage that lay before him.
Guiding Torrent with skilled precision, Adrian deftly maneuvered the steed between the black growths, his nimble control allowing them to dodge the obstacles. The green mist hung thick in the air, creating an eerie ambiance that only heightened the intensity of the chase.
Once safely over the treacherous growths, Adrian swiftly turned around, his eyes fixed on the pursuing creatures. With a mischievous glint in his gaze, he watched as the relentless beings stepped heedlessly onto the black plants, their weight triggering a chain reaction.
Explosions erupted one after the other, the black growths unleashing a toxic green mist that enveloped the creatures. Coughing and choking, they stumbled and fell, halting as the poisonous fog took its toll. One by one, they succumbed to the noxious fumes, their bodies collapsing to the ground.
Adrian's grin widened as he witnessed the effectiveness of his impromptu strategy. "That's what you get, you short little bitches!" He exclaimed, presenting his middle finger to the filthy, small creatures as they slowly died in agony.
Leaning forward in the saddle, Adrian smilingly patted Torrent's neck in appreciation, a silent acknowledgment of the steed's agility. "Good job, boy... let's keep going. We're almost there..."
As Adrian rode forward, his eyes were drawn to a magnificent sight that awaited him at the end of the road—a tall tower rising proudly against the scarlet-infested landscape. It stood as a beacon of untouched beauty amidst the decaying surroundings, its structure reminiscent of a wizard's abode.
The tower's architecture boasted intricate details, with elegant spires reaching toward the heavens and grand windows that glimmered in the sunlight. Green foliage adorned its surroundings, forming a stark contrast to the twisted, lifeless trees and ominous fungal growths that had plagued Caelid. Lush bushes and vibrant flowers bloomed, creating a serene oasis around the tower.
However, what truly caught Adrian's attention were the enigmatic blue crystals that adorned the tower's immediate surroundings. They emitted a gentle, ethereal glow, casting a serene aura around the structure. The crystals seemed to pulse with otherworldly energy, a testament to the arcane mysteries that awaited within.
Adrian's keen eyes spotted the shimmering blue barrier that obstructed the entrance of the tower, preventing his direct access. It flickered with arcane energy, a formidable obstacle that would deter most adventurers.
At the foot of the small stairway leading to the entrance, he noticed the broken remnants of an imp statue scattered into many fragmented pieces. It was once a conduit for unlocking the barrier, a vessel to accept the sacrifice of a Stonesword Key. However, with the statue in disarray, the traditional method was rendered impossible.
With deft hands, Adrian knowingly steered Torrent to move around the tower, looking for distinctive phenomena he had encountered earlier. And sure enough, he soon found what he was looking for.
Hidden behind the tower was an intense air current, emerging from the ground and shooting up to the heavens. It was spirit spirit that Torrent could use to leap over high obstacles. Adrian looked up and saw a balcony beneath one of the tower's slanted roofs.
With that, he took a deep breath and positioned his steed before the spirit spring, taking a deep breath. "I hope you're not afraid of heights, buddy..." Adrian muttered as he patted Torrent's neck.
"Because I sure as shit am..."
