Marvelous Twist #78

As the group rushed to the front yard, they were met with the sight of five pods, each gradually opening to reveal men clad in identical black combat fatigues, reminiscent of Bucky Barnes. Nick Fury furrowed his brow in puzzlement and turned to Bucky.

"Friends of yours?" Fury inquired, his voice laced with curiosity.

Bucky's smile held a bitter edge. "You could say that... I wasn't the only Winter Soldier," he replied. He observed the emerging assassins closely, noting the initial confusion on their faces as they assessed their surroundings.

"Apparently, I was the only usable one... the Super Soldier Serum these guys received made them unstable-- beyond control even..." Bucky explained further, his voice tinged with a mix of sympathy and regret.

As the confusion on the assassins' faces gradually gave way to hostility and anger, their gazes locked onto Evan's group, setting a tense atmosphere in the front yard.

"Great... just fucking great," Fury muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing in annoyance. He seemed to be speaking more to himself than to the others. "As if one super-powered assassin coming after me wasn't enough for one day," he grumbled, his frustration palpable.

Evan, however, remained remarkably composed. "There's no need to worry," he reassured the group with a calm demeanor. "Super assassins they might be, but they're still no match for Mother Nature." He chuckled softly, earning puzzled looks from everyone present.

Evan's smile widened as he directed their attention skyward. "Where do you think we are?" he posed the rhetorical question before anyone could respond. His outstretched hand indicated the heavens. All eyes followed his gesture and beheld two women hovering in the air in the garden.

One had dark skin and white hair, while the other was fair-skinned with red hair. The two women moved in perfect tandem, calling upon their destructive powers with mere gestures.

Blue electric arcs danced in Storm's eyes as dark clouds coalesced in the sky, unleashing five lightning bolts. These bolts struck down the assassins, but that wasn't the end.

Marvel Girl's psionic aura was almost intangible as she reached toward the assassins, her telekinetic powers flinging them into the air, only to send them crashing into the ground, instantly neutralizing the assailants.

Fury and the others exchanged wary glances at the impressive display of power, while Evan simply chuckled. "The people inside this mansion have been fighting people like Magneto and Apocalypse, as well as bona fide forces of nature for many years," he explained calmly. "Super assassins are a daily occurrence to them at this point." He shook his head in a somewhat dismissive manner.

"Well... that was enlightening if nothing else," Nick Fury remarked with an expression that was hard to decipher. Evan, however, could sense the wheels turning inside Fury's head as he witnessed the incredible might of the X-men.

It was evident that Fury was formulating grand plans, envisioning a future where he could use the power of the X-men to protect Earth from all threats, and Evan could see right through him.

Evan didn't find this prospect troubling. In fact, he welcomed it. The X-men had always wanted to make a difference, to use their powers for the greater good. However, society's fear and prejudice often prevented them from doing so.

Nick Fury, a man who had always recognized the potential of mutants and their incredible capabilities, was now witnessing firsthand that the X-men were allies worth having. Even a man as naturally paranoid and reluctant to trust as Fury was starting to see that the X-men's intentions were genuinely benevolent.

Steve Rogers couldn't help but sigh, his mind drifting back to the Battle of New York. "If only they were with us during the Battle of New York when the Chitauri invaded," he muttered, his voice tinged with regret. "Even if it were just those two ladies... the lives we could have saved," he added, shaking his head as he recalled the devastating casualties.

Evan turned to him, raising an eyebrow in response to Steve's musings. Steve let out a bitter chuckle. "I'm not that clueless. I understand why they couldn't be there, given their position," he said.

Evan shrugged. "Now you've seen what they're capable of. Perhaps, in the future, they'll have someone to vouch for them," he stated, giving Steve a meaningful look. "That way, they can step in and prevent thousands of casualties when the next threat emerges," he added.

Steve sighed again, his expression growing determined. "I've always believed in fighting for what's right, but maybe I can do more than just use my fists and shield," he said, his resolve strengthening.

Steve turned to Nick Fury. "I'm sure Director Fury would lend a hand once we've dealt with this mess," he added.

Fury cleared his throat, brought back to the present by Steve's words. "I'll see what I can do," he stated with a nod.

Dugan, who had little patience for the ongoing conversation, cleared his throat to redirect their focus. "It's great to be thinking about the future and painting a rosy picture, but we still have Hydra to deal with... and these guys," he said, pointing towards the unconscious Winter Soldiers.

"I don't know how you plan to handle them, but we should do it before they wake up again," he added with a grimace.

Steve turned his attention to the Winter Soldiers and then looked at Evan. "Can Professor Xavier heal these men like he did with Bucky?" he inquired. Before Evan could respond, Bucky chimed in.

"There's nothing to heal, Steve," he stated, shaking his head. "These guys were initially Hydra assassins, the cream of the crop. Even if you mend their shattered minds, they'll end up back with Hydra," he concluded.

...

While Bucky, Steve, and the others engaged in a heated debate over the fate of the unconscious Winter Soldiers, arguing whether to eliminate them or attempt to rehabilitate their fractured minds, Alexander Pierce maintained a vigilant watch over the dormant assassins through live satellite footage. His expression remained inscrutable, concealing a mix of frustration and determination.

Pierce knew that the Winter Soldiers wouldn't stand a chance against the formidable mutants of the X-Mansion.

But he hoped they would at least buy him enough time to navigate the bureaucratic red tape and secure approval for his plan to obliterate the mansion, along with everyone inside.

These Winter Soldiers were notorious ruthless assassins responsible for the deaths of numerous high-profile individuals even before they had been enhanced with the Super Soldier serum.

Their mere presence within the Mansion could have served as justification for the use of overwhelming force. Yet, they were neutralized within moments, ruining all his plans.

Pierce firmed his resolve, taking a deep breath as he turned to the subordinate, who was standing behind him. "Prepare to fire the Vortex Disruptor." He instructed.

The subordinate's eyes widened with a mix of shock and concern. "Sir, we don't even have permission to fire artillery... and the Vortex Disruptor is still in the testing phase," he objected, the weight of the decision heavy on his shoulders.

Pierce, undeterred, shook his head resolutely. "It doesn't matter. Can it be fired, or not?" he pressed, his tone unwavering.

The subordinate hesitated, aware of the consequences of their actions, but eventually nodded. "Yes, sir, it can be fired," he conceded reluctantly.

Pierce's smirk revealed a sense of ruthlessness. "Then stop wasting time and get to it immediately," he ordered. The subordinate sighed, the weight of their choices settling upon him.

"If we do this, sir, you'll lose your position, and there's even a possibility that you'll be neutralized," the subordinate warned, a hint of concern in his voice.

Pierce's cold resolve remained unshaken. "What of it?" he retorted. "Cut off one head, and two shall rise to replace it," he declared, showing a willingness to sacrifice everything for Hydra's cause.

...

In a sleek SUV, Black Widow and Hawkeye raced towards the X-mansion. The two skilled agents were well aware that something sinister was unfolding within SHIELD's ranks. An unknown adversary had infiltrated their organization, issuing orders to eliminate Captain America, Dum Dum Dugan, and Nick Fury.

Yet, they harbored no doubts about Steve Rogers; he was not their enemy. If, by some twisted turn of events, he were the adversary, then they were on the wrong side. They were willing to doubt anyone except for him.

The two agents had no intentions of following such vague orders. Instead, they intended to warn Captain America and the others regarding the hidden threat.

However, as they approached the X-mansion, their hearts sank. The crimson light above their destination confirmed their worst fears – they had arrived too late. The situation had escalated to a critical point, and their allies inside were in grave danger.
