Marvelous Twist #85
Added 2023-09-28 12:38:10 +0000 UTCAs Fury, Dugan, and Hawkeye neared the command center, Hawkeye raised his fist, signaling the others to halt.
"Gimme the rifle... I'll take care of watching the back from here," he said, his fatigue evident in his voice. He turned to Dugan, who exchanged a puzzled glance with Fury.
"It'll give me a chance to catch my breath as well," Hawkeye added, his breaths coming slightly faster.
Dugan ultimately shrugged. "Alright, mate," he conceded, tossing the rifle to Hawkeye. "Keep those eyes peeled and watch our rear ends," he instructed.
Hawkeye accepted the rifle with a nod, falling back behind Fury and Dugan.
Fury cleared his throat. "Alright, let's keep going then," he said, and the trio pressed on toward the command center, their senses sharp and their guard up, unaware of the challenges that lay ahead.
The trio pressed onwards, their progress marked by the sound of combat as they dispatched even more Hydra operatives.
"Step back, I'll create a way inside for us," Hawkeye announced, slinging the rifle onto his back and retrieving his bow. Dugan and Fury complied without a word, moving away from the entrance. They watched with anticipation as Hawkeye knocked an arrow and took aim at the reinforced door.
With a deft release, Hawkeye let the arrow loose, and it struck the door with thundering force. The explosion that followed obliterated the barrier, sending smoke billowing into the command bridge.
Without waiting for the smoke to disperse, the trio rushed forward and entered the command bridge. Their arrival was met with a tense standoff, as they found themselves facing not only Viper but also a contingent of Hydra operatives and Viper's followers from Madripoor.
Beyond the command bridge's reinforced windows, they could see Evan engaged in a fierce battle against the Juggernaut, a formidable adversary even for the likes of the Avengers.
Viper couldn't help but smile at the sight of the three men. "Took you boys long enough," she taunted with a chuckle. "I was starting to think you'd never make it."
Fury couldn't help but frown as he recognized Viper. "You're the last person I thought would work for Hydra," he remarked, his voice laced with disbelief. "Especially considering how you left the organization and their constant meddling in your country," he added, his gaze never leaving her.
Viper shook her head, a sardonic smile playing on her lips. "We all return to whence we came, or so the saying goes, and I was created by and for Hydra," she replied, her tone dripping with irony.
"I might have left Hydra on bad terms, but thanks to your meddling, I can make up and play nice with my old friends just fine." Her amusement was evident in both her words and expression.
"Allow me to demonstrate my gratitude," she concluded, raising her hands. In an instant, a deadly barrage of poisonous darts flew through the air in the direction of the trio, a tangible manifestation of her newfound allegiance to Hydra.
Fury, Dugan, and Hawkeye reacted instantly, their well-honed instincts guiding their movements. Viper's allies sprang into action, some wielding firearms, while others reached for their lethal arsenal of knives, sais, and swords, advancing with deadly intent.
Three assassins closed in on Fury, their movements synchronized and precise. The seasoned leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. remained remarkably composed in the face of their coordinated attack.
He raised his hand, using the sleeve of his bulletproof coat as an improvised shield, effectively blocking the sword swing from the first assassin.
Fury's hand snaked around the assassin's wrist, his grip unyielding as he twisted it, forcing the assailant to relinquish his weapon. In one fluid motion, Fury kicked out with precision, incapacitating his two other attackers.
Calmly, without missing a beat, Fury raised his pistol, the metallic click of the safety disengaging echoing in the tense air. Three quick shots rang out, finding their mark in the first assassin's chest, leaving him bleeding out on the floor.
As more assassins appeared, their relentless assault closing in on Fury, his wristwatch emitted a persistent beep, signaling an incoming call. Fury frowned, torn between the urgency of the battle and the importance of the call.
He made a quick decision, realizing that this communication might hold crucial information.
Amidst the chaos of combat, Fury managed to answer the call while continuing to fire his gun, deflecting the incoming assailants.
Black Widow's voice came through the communication device, a cacophony of explosions and combat serving as the backdrop to her urgent message. "Are you there, director?" she inquired, her voice carrying the weight of the ongoing battle.
"I'm in the middle of something, Romanoff. Make it quick," Fury replied tersely, his attention divided as more assassins and Hydra operatives lunged at him.
Black Widow wasted no time. "Listen, I don't know what's going on, but the Hawkeye with you might be a fake. I just met with the real Hawkeye, and he's been held captive in the Helicarrier for days now..."
Her words carried a sense of urgency, and were followed by a slew of acute warnings, which didn't even register in the director's mind.
Suddenly, it all started to click into place—the doubts sown within the team by Hawkeye's comments during the meeting, his reluctance to use his bow, and his out-of-character behavior.
Fury's one good eye widened as he scanned the chaotic battleground, searching for the imposter.
His gaze landed on the imposter, who was sneaking up behind Dum Dum Dugan with a hard-to-read expression. Fury's warning came too late, a desperate "Look out!" escaping his lips just as Dugan turned around.
The imposter Hawkeye moved with lethal precision, the knife in his hand penetrating Dugan's back, piercing his heart, and emerging from his chest in a shocking and brutal blow.
The veteran soldier crumpled to the ground, a look of disbelief and betrayal in his eyes as he succumbed to the fatal wound.

Meanwhile, Captain America and Bucky Barnes had tracked down Crossbones, cornering him in a spacious, dimly lit room that bore the telltale signs of a training area.
The atmosphere was tense, and both heroes were acutely aware that Crossbones had orchestrated this confrontation as part of his scheme. The room had likely been rigged with traps, and the odds were stacked against them.
"Gentlemen, welcome to my kill zone, which you so generously walked into with your own feet," Crossbones declared, his arms outstretched in a dramatic fashion.
"As far as I'm concerned, my only job was to distract you two long enough for Pierce's people to take out your friends, so I've more than earned my pay." He punctuated his statement with a sinister chuckle.
"However, if you wish to continue our little game, I'll be more than happy to oblige you." He concluded.
Bucky Barnes and Captain America exchanged wary glances, understanding the gravity of their situation. Bucky decided to take the lead. "Go on. I'll take care of our murder-happy friend here," he asserted, his tone determined.
Captain America frowned, the concern evident in his eyes. He sensed the reluctance to leave Bucky alone, especially considering his recent recovery from brainwashing.
"I'll be fine. Professor Xavier did wonders for my mind, and I need to start redeeming myself anyway," Bucky reassured him with a faint smile. "Taking down an international terrorist seems like a good place to start as any."
After a moment of contemplation, Captain America reluctantly relented with a sigh. "Fine, but be careful," he cautioned, then swiftly turned around and sprinted toward the exit, leaving Bucky to face Crossbones and the treacherous challenges of the room alone.

In another part of the helicarrier, Tony Stark had arrived at his destination, encased in his Iron Man suit, and he used the suit's power to blow open the doors to the server room. His mission was clear: deploy Jarvis directly into the helicarrier's system to gain control of its defenses and security measures before rushing to aid his allies.
The room, filled with racks of servers and blinking lights, seemed to hold the key to their success.
However, as Tony stepped into the server room, his gaze swept over the familiar face that greeted him. He couldn't conceal his surprise, and his eyes widened beneath the protective helmet.
"Alexander Pierce... shouldn't you be in your office?" Tony inquired, raising an incredulous eyebrow at the unexpected encounter.
Alexander Pierce chuckled, his demeanor strangely relaxed given the circumstances. "I am in my office, as far as your friends are concerned, anyway," he replied casually, as though he was enjoying a leisurely conversation. The ambiguity of his words hung in the air.
Tony's tone was laced with disinterest as he retorted, "Whatever that's supposed to mean, it doesn't matter. You just made my job that much easier... I'm basically hitting two birds with one stone." He prepared to take action to subdue Pierce.
However, Pierce's smile only broadened. "I'm afraid it won't be that easy," he countered, producing a small trigger device from his pocket. He held it up, a sense of calculated anticipation in his expression.
"You see, I came here prepared," Pierce explained, his finger pressing the button on the trigger. As he did, the server room came to life with a series of electronic whirs and clicks. Hidden EMP devices scattered throughout the room activated, their electromagnetic pulses wreaking havoc on the electronic systems within.
