There is a dwarf who lives in  a giant icicle, which hangs suspended above a cliff in the frozen wastes. Using his abilities as a wizard, he has hollowed it out from the surface; functioning as an upside-down tower for himself, from which he can study the stars, and the flat, clear plane far below (from the direction of which lies the next nearest city). 

The bitter old wizard lives in isolation, and is mistrusting of strangers—especially his own kind. Few know his past, but a few years ago he saved his people from a King that was driving his people into ruin; accepting a future life in hiding as price for assassinating the  corrupted dwarf, and aiding in his overthrow by a far better ruler.  

Or so he had thought. In reality, the ruler he had helped was an even worse tyrant, and as soon as he was in power had sent assassins after him. Fleeing for his life, he has spent his time since then hiding across the continent, before settling here; in his secret abode. 

Select few know of his location, let alone his true identity. He now goes by the name Dhonmoki, and spends his time studying astrology and other topics which fascinate him. He enjoys the bitter cold of his location, considering it his penance for his naïve mistakes in dabbling in the  affairs of Kings.

Adventure Seeds  

• Wizards have seen strange lights amidst the stars, and fear it is an omen of future evil. After swearing your party to secrecy, they have sent you to a hermit astrologist for answers—only when you arrive, you discover assassins have followed you to his hidden location, and are intent on killing everyone inside.   
• A dwarven king (through an emissary) is discreetly hiring other races to kill a rogue mage who escaped his kingdom and is a danger to all. He has received word of his  most recent location, and is willing to pay well for prompt action.  
• There is a rumour about a hastily-abandoned wizards tower, filled with valuable items, ripe for the taking. But accompanying them are also boobytraps, and dangerous illusions…
