Color Changes?

One thing that has always been on my mind and the mind of of others is the color of characters and how some seem too similar or are too hard to see.  We get many people saying they cannot see our yellows well.  This would specifically be with Apple Bloom and Applejack, both of whom we darkened their colors a bit.  Another that has always been Soarin' and Rainbow Dash.  Surprisingly no one has ever commented on it, but I always personally though their colors may be too similar for some people and they may read the text wrong because of it.  So as an example I have a proposed new color for Soarin'.

But I want to ask you all.  Have our color choices ever been a problem for you and if so, which characters do you think we should alter?  Do you have a color idea we should use?  We will listen to you and if we do changes, I doubt most people will realize we changed their colors slightly (but you will know). So what do you think?

Color Changes?

Thanks for that little history. I have thought of changing her design before, but I think that would do more damage to her then just leaving it be. We're in too deep. ;-)

I didn't recognize Starlight when I first saw her in the series, but soon accepted the design as well. The sassy-ness of the character is just so memorable and so visually obvious.

I also agree our Big Mac is very lacking/ It doesn't even look like him most of the time. We might have to redesign him. I also find it silly our Starlight doesn't really look like her either, but people just accept it. ;-)

Good point. We will create some versions to share with you all and see which colors you all prefer.

Don't you think, by the new color scheme, that Dash is more similar to canon Soarin', and Soarin' is more similar to canon Dash? :P

I kind of prefer the old Soarin' color, but I can see how changing it benefits the others more. By the way, the one that brought me the most trouble was Big Mac... Often takes me long enough to realize that the mysterious crimson (and not-so-large) pony is him.

You could always go with dashed lines in two colours! :)

Give Twilight a thicker line weight to match her thicc assets :)

I am thinking every change we do, we will run it by all of you first to get your opinions. Seems like this new Soarin' color is good.

That's the goal. It's difficult to know if one should use a main color on a character or a more accented color for a character as well. An example would be lets say.... Sunset Shimmer. Would we use her red or her yellow color? Probably would have to go with her yellow because her red just doesn't match how she would look if drawn in outline form. But then her yellow might blend in with our Applejack yellow. *Shrugs* It's silly.

Thanks. We've changed Rarity's color once before (no one noticed). We changed it because for a time Rarity and Twilight were too similar then when Starlight came along she and Rarity were too similar. Ha! We might try it again eventually.

That was always the goal, but as time has moved on and more characters were introduced, some colors for fairly regular characters began to look the same!

I think we will make that official starting almost right away!

Yeah, I like the new Soarin' color. However, there are only so many noticeably different colors so some will unfortunately look similar. I guess the best thing is to try to use different colors for characters that would typically interact the most.

I second the issues with seeing and reading Applejack and Apple Bloom, e.g. in "Family Sport". Fluttershy is another yellow character who is pretty difficult to see and more crucially, read (e.g. in "Lifetime Tick"). Moondancer's color is OK. It also gets a bit confusing when Twilight, Starlight and Rarity are on the same page, the pesky purple pony parade.

Finding an unique color for each character is pretty smart!

The new Soarin colour is definitely an improvement.
