I like to think that in the fox culture at the new years, they hold a festival where they put messages on lanterns and cast them off hoping a deity or spirit will aid them in their goals and dreams for the new year. The festival is usually held near a lake or big body of water so everyone can see the hopes and dreams of those who participate light the night.
