Mr. Sunshine is one of our favorite dramas and we know that delves a lot into the history of how Japan took over. Much of the history and that time is really sad and it's something we never learned about. I know many in Japan don't even know their own history. ARMYS did something called The White Paper Project that goes into detail what Korea went through during that time and tries to explain the current political climate. I'll mark the date in our calendar so we don't miss it next year.

Here in the US a lot of cultures are lumped together and people don't really understand how it's different. Like Netflix calling Kimbap "Sushi" which I know a lot of people were upset about. Knowing the correct terminology is very helpful!

Speaking of Korean history, it is because countless Koreans were killed, injured, violated, and tortured by them in Japanese colonial era. Even now, grandmothers who were violated at that time are still alive. In Korea, it is called jagaeg(์๊ฐ). Korean queen Empress Myeongseong was also killed by a Japanese ninja.

2021-12-22 04:25:51 +0000 UTCYes, there are many dramas, movies and books out there based on Jeongjo's story. The actors are great in the show. Someone told me Lee Junho (the prince) is a singer from a band called 2 PM. His diction is impressive as if he was trained in classical theatre. I guess my prejudice against pop idols acting in features has been under the surface as I was really impressed by his acting and diction. I have watched other dramas he was in while I was waiting for the red sleeve's new eps to come out. Lee Junho's choice of characters is interesting.

I know we will have to find the answer to that question as we continue to watch the drama. Yes, not everything can be accurate because we also need dramatic elements to make the tv show more fun. I'm excited to read the novel myself...I've read some quotes through blogs and seems so good haha.

2021-12-22 02:42:30 +0000 UTCOk, so it's adapted from a novel about the king and the consort! That makes it a bit easier in terms of translating the story to drama form. And that is absolutely a difficult question to answer. Did she really love him or did she just give in because he loved her? What a question! We never take the dramas as true history, but we do look into the history a bit when we watch them. The biggest historical drama we've watched in that regard was Six Flying Dragons. There were many historical things that happened in these dramas and they contained real people, but they added other characters and embellished as they went. We can't wait for more from Red Sleeve!

The theme of the novel was "The king loved the court lady, but did the court lady love the king back." The drama also explores this question.

2021-12-22 02:21:48 +0000 UTCThis drama is a hot topic in South Korea right now. People really like the chemistry between the two leads and their acting. I think the drama intrigues people because according to history, the female lead was his first love and only love (he did have other wives to conceive a heir though, which was common back then even amongst noblemen). She is the only court lady in Joseon history to reject a king's proposal of becoming his concubine twice (he proposed to her first when he was 14 and then when he was 29). She is one of the two concubines whom we actually know their full name (we only know surnames for other concubines and most queens) because the king actually left records of her full name.
