Pretty heavy stuff for a kid but the IRA was very active at the time and used this tactic a lot so we had heard about it on the news anyway and the school must have decided that teaching us something was better than trying to hide it from us. I remember it was really scary but talking about it in a classroom with the best teacher I ever had really helped. We discussed it as “What would you do if…” and the morality of it all: “Is it ok to do a bad thing if you’re protecting someone else,” or, “If somebody else makes you do a bad thing, is the bad thing you do really your fault?” Schools were really good back then.
