I think it was the best the writers could come up with for Sam to separate the hallucinations from the real world. I think it works very well and is true to the show and characters. I understand how this could be a difficult subject for some, but it is better than the alternative for Sam in this situation and is not shown as a positive for any other reason.

It makes sense though. The Winchester family are not good at coping mechanisms... What other solution would they have come up with?
