They have the upper hand in that they outnumber him and he can't kill them all. However if they went for their weapons, he'd definitely kill one of them, maybe 2 before they took him down. None of them want to die, for the rest of their living crew to get the ship over their own dead body. The captain would be the most likely to die, so he orders them to turn around and walk out rather than let himself die so THEY can profit.

I had to rewind and check again to make sure I saw it right. So rare. There's Firefly and the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" and that's about it.
