I feel it ties into the conversation in the next episode, where they quote the "warrior/philosopher" who said that you can live and dine with a man for ages, but you don't truly know his true self until you dangle him over a volcano. He saw who Jayne truly was when he thought he was going to die, and if he hadn't seen that, he would have let him go.

2020-01-08 10:34:02 +0000 UTCOh definitely. I think if Mal had wanted to kill him he would have just shot him or he would have left him behind. But he did all of this to test Jayneโs reaction. And I think it was not until that moment where Jayne was like โ dont tell them what i didโ that he realized how ashamed Jayne was. Because he cared about what the rest of the crew would think of him even after he died, and it is a shift in his character. I dont think the Jayne we met at the beginning of the season would have cared about anyone elses opinion.
