YEAH! that makes a whole lot of sense and I can't believe I didn't make the connection between the blood, emotions and how it affects vampires in general. And how it also affects the way you grieve. And yes, at the end there you could clearly see that he didn't get the satisfaction he thought he would get by killing her, which only makes it worse because he is stuck in between two confronting emotions. It is also important to point out that Damon did not switch off his humanity again which would have been a lot easier to simply escape back into not feeling anything at all.

When it is from the vein it is a vampire anti-depressant and helps ease the pain of grief. If Damon was human he wouldn't have been feeling the pain as strongly because vampires have heightened emotions. But because he is a vampire, he can't take a pill to help him feel better, all he has is blood to take the pain away. Vampires and grief are a bad combo, they can't cope, it is too much. As to Stefan managing when Lexi died, that might have got something to do with his emotions being dampened because of his diet. A lot of the bad stuff they showed us was via Damon, but it was often to explain vampire mythology. That scene at the end was no exception. There is also some insight into Damon trying to fight himself. He is changing and in some respects he doesn't want to, but at the same time he can't help it. He needs to open up, but he doesn't feel comfortable opening up to those he loves. He doesn't like to burden people with his own problems. So he turned to a stranger. But to make sure nobody would ever find out, he had to kill her. And judging by his face, instead of it having the desired effect of pain relief, he felt guilty instead. So it has made him feel worse. It was a lesson for Damon that blood doesn't heal all wounds, especially when you kill for it. Bloodbags nourish vampires, blood from the vein makes them high.
