It makes sense that Damon's first thought when learning Bonnie was dead was about how it would effect Elena. Like, yeah, Bonnie's death should be about her and not about Elena, but it does make sense. Damon, while I believe he cared about her to some degree by this point, they weren't really close or anything. He's not gonna be heart broken over her death. But he is gonna immediately think of how this is gonna effect those he is close to. Like Elena, who would understandably be his first thought as his girlfriend. And Jeremy, who would be his next thought as his girlfriend's brother and the kid who right now is kinda his responsibility. But I do agree that it was kinda unfair that her death was basically immediately made about Elena rather than Bonnie herself. But with the character, it does make sense. Now, if it had been Caroline, or even Stefan, then it'd be weird and would really annoy me. But as it was Damon, it does make sense. Even if it's messed up...

I don’t know if it’s how the character has progressed that makes it difficult to act with or what but I always wondered why he’d become so dull. And omg Elena this episode truly bothers me. Sometimes she can be so naive. And as much as I love Bonnie I couldn’t get fully invested in the funeral/memorial because she’s physically still there. Personally it would’ve been more impactful if we hadn’t seen her at all until this point. Bonnie honestly deserves so much more. Her whole purpose is helping others and sacrificing herself. I can’t stand how the writers and Julie Plec treat Bonnie.
