I am beyond convinced that AoS literally cannot exist without Clark Gregg appearing in an episode. Seriously. Even in episodes where he doesn't "fit" they still found ways to get Clark Gregg on screen. In 3x05 "4,722 Hours" Coulson appears in Jemma's birthday message; in 5x05 "Rewind" he appears in the re-shot diner scene at the beginning of the episode; and in 6x03 "Fear And Loathing On The Planet Of Kitson" there's that weird tag scene with Sarge and Jaco. I don't think that it's merely a matter of "keeping him", I think that, contractually speaking, no Clark Gregg = No AoS.
