This was part of the massive high school football movie trend at the time. Josh Hartnett was the most high demand actor in this movie. He was offered to play Batman (Christian Bale) and then Superman (Brian Routh). He turned down both roles for fear that playing a superhero would damage his career. His short series Penny Dreadful is definitely worth watching.

2021-10-30 01:49:16 +0000 UTCOne of the best late 90's sci-fi horror movies, for sure. Stacked cast, kind of amazing to think about how so many of these actors' careers turned out. Robert Rodriguez did a great job directing this. It's funny because most of his independently made movies are very stylized and niche (Sin City, Machete, etc) but he can also make excellent mainstream movies like this, Spy Kids, and Allitta: Battle Angel. I am a little disappointed they didn't use the KISS song "Parasite" on the soundtrack.

Sometimes its eggs end up in bird poop which gets eaten by fish, so now the parasite is inside a fish. But it doesn't want to be in a fish so the parasite alters the fish's brain chemistry. The fish starts swimming to the surface, laying on its side, and splashing, making it a perfect target for fish eating birds. In other words the parasite forces the fish to commit suicide just so it can get back inside a bird.
