But I believe it goes way further than just depression - I believe we literally create our own reality by our thoughts and emotions - like how the Angels self actualize in this story, or like how in this story we create our own hell loop... Not just conscious thoughts or feelings but sub conscious too. And not some fleeting or casual thought or feeling - but rather intense focus and repetition. This may be why so many find this story so appealing and compelling - because deep down we recognize it has some important spiritual understanding about our reality.... and it is very well written on many other levels too. A point I want to mention has to do with the gratuitous scene where Caleb is arrested. This scene has nothing to do with racism, it has to do with some cops acting outside of their authority regards use of force; and it also portrays something most folks who jump to this "racist" conclusion - are sorely misinformed about: That is you do not have the right to discuss, dispute or challenge an officer if there is a warrant for your arrest - period. If you do not comply, they are authorized to use force, and the amount of force can escalate depending on your refusal to comply or your behavior. Throwing Caleb to the ground was uncalled for, but they had a warrant for his arrest and Amenadiel had no right to "try to reason" with them - it is not up to them - they can only exercise the warrant. Furthermore, once Amenadiel challenged them and angrily moved towards the officer saying he will not comply - that officer is justified in using force or even deadly force for a non compliant person! You, We do not have the option to challenge a police officer - comply and fight your battles in court - not on the street! I will bet money they wrote this scene gratuitously only because DB Woodside (Amenadiel) pushed for some racial overtone to be applied. Countless times the talent will interject their own ideas onto a script, and often it messes things up rather than augment things. (I worked in movie and TV production for 15 years on sets) And the writers did an admirable job of catering to one of their star's requests, but also inserting some context which somewhat balances this false narrative.... Notice Dan chided Amenadiel for suggesting it was due to race - "c'mon , the murder weapon with the victim's blood was found in his locker" Dan says as he says "how dare you".... And the people that mattered saw no race, but only that they felt Caleb was being set up! And to put some icing on that cake, the drug dealer - ended up killing Caleb - because he - the black man assumed the worst about Caleb - that he must have ratted on the dealer to get off of his murder charge so quickly. So ironically the only racism in this side story, was by a black man against another black man! (the dealer didn't even consider Caleb got off because he was innocent) It's a bit disingenuous to consider the beat cops as racist or at least one bad apple, when Dan has done several far worse things than throw Caleb to the ground - yet we excuse or accept Dan. Dan shot another cop, and two bystanders - and covered it up. OK he did it to protect Chloe... He also took a gun from evidence to give to that corrupt cop, who used it to kill several innocent people... Lucifer broke McCaffery's back... Dan told Tiernan it was Lucifer who broke his son's back... Amenadiel brought a doomed soul back from hell to try kill Lucifer and that soul killed several innocent people. And finally, Lucifer and Amenadiel went to the drug dealer and beat him to within an inch of his life. Are they bad apples or racist? The show does an amazing job of portraying that we do indeed have free will, Angel or Human - and there are consequences to our actions. And ironically the show points out there is as much potential evil in the celestials as in humans!

Just remember we really have no reference to the emotional high if we do not experience the lows too. And the emotional roller coaster has only just gotten out of the "kiddie ride" section compared to what's coming!
