My interpretation on why her feelings for Damon were magnified when she turned and her feelings for Stefan were not is because while she loved Stefan as a human I think it was more out of friendship and gratefulness, again each season she has made comments that make it seem (even if she was not aware of it) that her feelings towards Stefan were more out of gratefulness for giving her something positive to cling too when she was depressed after her parents died, not to mention she never really knew Stefan, he only showed her one side of himself.

Its really annoying. That's one of the reasons why I can't relate to Elena and why I think as a protagonist she doesn't work. She has no storyline and she is the most passive character ever. She doesn't drive the plot, she rarely has agency, the thing that makes her the most special is not something she achieved but something she was born with. She does absolutely nothing of value or importance or anything other than withstand pain.

To answer your question about them using Kai to "bring stuff up" again.... I think the show was unwilling to let go of the love triangle as a safety net for viewership. They were scared that committing to a relationship would mean alienating and losing the shippers, so every other episode, they'd throw in a line here and there that makes it seem like the love triangle isn't resolved. The sire bond in season 4, the destiny thing in season 5, the "Elena is only with Damon because she's a vampire" and the "amnesia" thing in season 6. I think they all just served the purpose of having Stelena shippers feel like their ship still has a chance, but all it does is reduce Elena to her role in the relationships. I mean, we literally have almost all of Stefan's scenes with Caroline, Steroline is clearly the dynamic that Stefan's character is involved in right now, yet the show still tries to somehow tie his character to Elena, who he hasn't been with since early season 4? It feels like Elena hasn't had a single storyline or character arc not revolving around her relationship with Damon for God knows how long. Damon at least gets a break from Delena because he also drives the plot, had his story with Bonnie and delivers a lot of the comedy, so he often interacts with a variety of people, including the villains, which furthers the plot even more. But yeah... they should have just let go of the love triangle and the insecurities about the relationship at the end of season 4 or early season 5.
