2021-12-28 19:08:34 +0000 UTCI very much doubt Rossi would ever forgive himself for what happened to Zoe. It wasn't his fault, like Hotch said she went to Crime Scenes all the time. But I think it's more than just what he said to her that night. Seeing his books on her shelf, seeing how much his books seemed to inspire her. It's likely that part of the reason she was so obsessed with all of that and why she went to Crime Scenes so much was because she read his books. I mean, like you said about killers who read the books to get inspiration, it's likely that there was already part of her that was interested in criminology and all that and so she bought his books to learn more. But something tells me reading his books is what got her really into it all. And I think that's likely why her Mum was so upset when he paid for the funeral stuff. She knows how much Zoe loved his books, how much they likely inspired her, and so in a way, she probably blamed him a bit too, especially as she died right after going to his book reading, and also her emotions were already really high as her daughter was just murdered. But it wasn't his fault, he had no reason to think there was a Serial Killer, and he just worded things in a way that could easily be interpreted as "Go to the Crime Scene and investigate it until you figure it out!" especially to someone who already tends to go to Crime Scenes for that reason. And like you said, Rossi tends to get very emotionally involved with cases. And there's a pattern with the ones that have been big like that. First one was the parents of those 3 kids, and he'd just finished up a case nearby when it happened. He was in town for both of them. He likely partly blamed himself for that one too, even though there was no way he could've stopped it, it's just the whole being so nearby when it happens would get to you. And the fact that he can get so emotionally involved can be both good and bad. Sometimes it can help the case because if you've made it personal you're less likely to be able to stop and so it's sometimes more likely you'll eventually solve the case. But it can also be bad because it can damage you a lot, and it can also make you look at things in such a way that you just wanna solve it and so whatever it initially seems like can get stuck in your head and you can see no other options, or you can be so determined that it's bigger than it actually is and not believe it's the person it is because it doesn't feel right for it. The whole thing is so sad and complicated. They all get emotionally involved occasionally, which is good for the characters and showing us just how human they are. It can just be very dangerous too. And yeah, Rossi does tend to try to alleviate the guilt he feels for things. Like with that other case he called the kids every year to let them know he hadn't given up because he thought they'd wanna know (and I said on that video that it's such a complicated situation there because sometimes that's what the families want, to know that there's someone out there still trying to solve the case. But there it was the opposite, they just wanted to move on and his phone calls always reminded them of it.) and here he paid for the funeral because he wanted to do something for Zoe and her Mum. Episodes where the Unsub doesn't have trauma or anything like that and they just kill people because they want to, because that's just how they are. They always make me so uncomfortable. Just knowing that there are people out there who just kill for the sake of it. Because they want to. Because that's what's normal to them. Agh! Also, what you said about the Lawyer and how he could defend him. I totally agree. I'm never going to understand people who can sit and defend someone who murdered people, who raped people, who did any of these horrible things. How are you going to live with yourself if you succeed in defending this person, they go free, and they go on to kill more people? They wouldn't be defending these people if it'd been someone they loved getting killed. Like, I get this is their job and how they make money, I just don't get how anyone can do that...
