This is more a writing issue for me. Honestly I can't remember Stefan giving that many "I'm the good brother speeches". I can think of a handful of times when he has mentioned it but he doesn't go on a tangent about it. He mostly shows it by his actions. I do agree that he does give Damon a hard time but at the same time, "you make your bed dude", if Damon has spent years acting like a monster then how can he expect to not be branded as one? Now with this in mind it is hypocritical of Stefan since he is not a saint and its not like he hasn't acted like a monster. To me this is more an act of self assurance. Like he needs to convince himself that he is the good brother and Damon is the bad brother as part of his mechanism. To me, Stefan doing this makes sense because of his character. But with Damon is different because to me it comes off as more like the writers reminding us all the time that he is a bad guy. It also feels like they want him to come off as introspective or something? Like "hey look, Damon is doing bad things but he knows he is doing bad things because he thinks of himself as the bad guy and he can't help himself." It's annoying because they keep doing this back and forth with Damon where he is good one moment and then he goes off the rails but he knows he is bad and he is so tortured about it and we are supposed to now feel bad for him. Damon is a great character but the writers do not know what they're doing with him at times. The thing about this show that really gets on my nerves is that is all passive. People call Damon a monster and yet, except for Caroline, constantly give him passes and forgive him for all the crap he does. There is no real accountability with Damon, none. So him saying he is bad comes off as empty to me.

It does bug me when Damon is constantly referred to as the bad guy (even by himself) as if he is not constantly changing and struggling to be better.

And the fact that Bonnie jumping into Damon's arms was improvised just makes it better! Because Kat and Ian were really close irl. I mean, Julie tried to kill Bonnie off so many times because she's racist and hated Kat, but Ian actually threatened to quit if she did that... And I'm pretty sure they wanted Bamon to happen too...
