Lily is a very complicated, messed up character, but I feel like a lot of times, people neglect to consider both the times and the psychology of dormestic abuse. Lily was a victim of it, too. He had clearly no problem both psychologically and physically tormenting her. She had no means of escaping him, nor had she any means of taking the kids away. And given the times and the circumstances, she might not even have had much of a choice when it came to marrying him... nor having children with him. He's an abusive, extremely rich man in that time, and she clearly has nothing and no support whatsoever. It's not like she could go to the police and accuse him of being an abuser. In fact, I don't think any sort of abuse within a marriage was even considered illegal at the time. I also don't think that taking Damon's toys away so he confesses to something is abuse. Ditching them with their father though is definitely a messy situation. I get that she was struggling with her bloodlust at the time, but still.... Also, Matt is the biggest little bitch in the entire series, and I cannot stand his existence. I don't understand why he is still there. He has no purpose. Nobody likes him, Julie Plec aside

I feel like it’d be pretty easy to realise it wasn’t Stefan who took it, and there’s no one else left. And I think that might be partly why he chose that story to tell Lily. I mean, I’m sure there were kids of worse memories of their Father, yet that’s the one he chose. But also, the fact that he confessed because he was scared of what he’d do to Stefan. I wish we could’ve had more of young Salvatore Brothers... It really seems that, especially after Lily “died” Damon was Stefans main caretaker. I mean, back in the funeral episode in s6 we saw him be the one to tell Stefan it’s okay to cry, he gave him his tie and all that. Idk, just the way he was with him in flashbacks gives me that impression. Also, his rant near the end about Lily where he said about how Lily would never change and that Stefan would keep trying to find her redemption and keep getting disappointed, it can’t just be me who caught that he was totally worried about Stefan there, but also that kinda explains why he’s so against trying to find Lily’s redemption. He’s terrified of being disappointed and he also feels he needs to be the pessimist to protect Stefan from the disappointment as much as he can. Glad Lily finally saw the similarities in Julian and Giuseppe though. I do feel for her, she’s clearly in a cycle of abuse and she doesn’t deserve that. But at the same time, she basically admitted to being emotionally abusive/manipulative when the boys were children (taking the toys until Damon confessed to doing something.) and then she faked her death and ditched her sons with their abusive father. Which is where my sympathy ends. I get she needed to escape, but she never came back for them and that makes me sad...
