She's absolutely amazing in this episode. I can't really blame the dad either, based on his perspective, but it's also true that he never knew all of the circumstances and it's impossible to say if or how his reaction would have been different if he did. I don't think anyone is totally without blame here and that's what makes it so hard for everyone.
