Bones S4E21

MAYHEM ON A CROSS

Comments

One of the most memorable episodes of the show. Dr Wyatts appearance, Sweets character development and the end scene is amazing. I love moments were Bones shows how much she really cares about the people around her and how she is willing to reach out. Its a part of her character that often gets left out for the more humorous side of the show. She might be a little clumsy when it comes to social interactions (the baby duck comment was brilliant) but once she understands what's going on she will take that first emotional step to form a connection. Im also Swedish, which like Norway has a thriving metal scene, so Im more or less immune to all the screeching in this episode. Its almost comforting :P

I think this on my top 5 episodes of the show in general. Sweets is my favorite character, so I loved having a Sweets heavy episode. Having Dr. Wyatt shine the line on his need to fit into their “family” was so emotional, and I was so happy when Brennan was willing to open up and Booth following suit, to please her and include Sweets was highlight of the episode. To me, Booth has always been the one to hold back on their attraction, whether to keep his heart safe or Bones, Sweets finally sees it at the end of the episode. Bones crying and Booth looking like he’s in pain because of it and just wanting to stop her tears, even if it means making himself vulnerable, he’s totally in love with her and Sweets sees that.

This is one of my favourite episodes of any season. First, but not the most prominent reason, Stephen Fry is back. Hearing him repeat my name several times with his splendid warm inflections, gives me a warm glow. Then there are the characters emotional expansion. The continuation of our favourite couples dynamic. You've had a frustrating time on occasion with the groups treatment of Sweets. This episode explains a little more about the self-imposed nature of our local and wider groups relationships. Sweets in some ways acts a bit like a kid looking for approval from this family he wanted to be part of. This sits hand in hand with the desire to be respected and taken seriously. A lot of it has been building up to this point. Once this observation is framed perfectly by Gordon. Temperance's understanding of anthropology helps her to connect to Sweets as part of the group, then giving him what he needs; whilst sharing a vulnerable moment that would typically be reserved for Booth. It's a beautiful moment that has often has me in tears. Gordon's observations of Booth and Bones, the who is aware argument. That's played out for the viewer in the final scene. Sweets notices it and if we are paying attention, it's there for us too. I think it's pretty clear what the episode is trying to tell us at that moment.
