You are correct in your assessment of this episode. The characters were hollow caricatures, and the story had no real point or resolution. This is the problem with much of season 4. Without showrunner Dan Harmon, the quality of writing is not quite the same. Luckily, he returns for seasons 5 and 6. There are still good episodes in season 4. It's only bad in comparison to the high standard set in season 1 and especially, seasons 2 and 3.
