Also known as a Birthing Spirit, Birthing Ghost, or by many as a Birdmother Spirit. Death is not final. Though many course through life fearing the end, and some hope for some form of peaceful afterlife, others fear what they may become if they get caught during that final transition. Not all spirits are found by the agents of death that ferry them to the afterlife, and not all spirits are ready to go once found. If a creature's death was particularly violent or traumatic, it can leave behind terrible remnants of what they once were. Some ghosts exist as remaining fragments of one's psyche at the time of death, while others are psychic imprints of what you once were during that moment. Regardless of the method, violent and malevolent spirits may come into being through these methods as the violence of their death and their pure emotion is channeled and warped by strange evil forces. Sometimes purposely through dark magic, or other times simply because of cursed land or necromancy tainted locations, the dead will rise and become something hideous. Ubume are the spirits of women who died in childbirth. Their forms are altered as their necks lengthen, and their heads become more bulbous, sprouting a hideous tooth filled beak. Their bodies often become riddled with feathers, and their hands contort into claws, and their feet become human like talons. A thick, yellow mist seems to waft from them, seeping from their deformed bird beak. They walk with a swaying, shambling gait, often times dragging unknown organs and umbilical cords behind them with a puddle of afterbirth, clutching in their arms a swaddled baby, or a strange egg as they cry and whimper in the night. The Ubume may appear to be much like a human woman in the dark of night, sometimes even appearing as the woman did in life initially. Often times found in areas with little light, near where the woman had died during child birth, meaning they are found near clinics, or in old homes most often. They will quietly weep, occasionally breaking into louder, deeper sobs as they shamble forward carrying their baby. If she appears as she did in life, if anyone approaches her, she will attempt to hand them her baby, asking for assistance. If she appears as a malformed spirit, something the older Ubume have more difficulty in hiding, , one may not recognize the strange mutations and inhuman form of the woman until they get too close, at which point the woman will likely turn toward the individual and begin her attack. If the Ubume hands a person the baby, they will quickly realize that it appears to be a crying egg, swaddled in bloody blankets. Blood and afterbirth seeps from the egg as a piercing eye peers from the darkness within. Creatures who match sight with this eye are often times frozen in fear as hideous visions wrack their minds, visions of swarming, pecking birds clouding their vision. During this time the Ubume will often times lift her legs or arms and use her claws to tear open the creature's stomach, disemboweling them and spilling their entrails on the ground. She will then shove the egg into the open wound on the creature's stomach. In many cases the creature will simply die when it's stomach is torn open, however those that do not die of shock from the initial loss will often wake up feeling terrible the next day, feeling a stomachache or terrible cramps, regardless of their sex. Some time after the creature will begin showing some symptoms of pregnancy including kicks and movement, but also signs of internal organ failure, before dying a short time later. These people are often times found with large wounds to their internal organs and genitals, as if some small creature had escaped from their body. Those who have actually witnessed the process will claim seeing the birth of a pale, white or grey baby with dead eyes and a full set of adult teeth emerging before disappearing with a terrifying scream of delight. When this is successful, reports of the Ubume appearing will often come to an end, though child mortality, infertility, and miscarriage in the surrounding area for miles will skyrocket for generations with many married couples and children reporting seeing a large baby like figure in their nightmares and the dark corners of their home. Some call this creature the Unyeaned, or Unborn, though witches often refer to it as a Stillborn Scion. Ubume who aren't able to stun a creature and impregnate it, will still chase their prey that had seen them. They are able to move at quick speeds despite their usual limping, shamble, moving like an infuriated ostrich or a similar large land bird. She will often begin screaming and rushing toward the individual while the yellow vapor begins to emit from her mouth. This vapor emits from her as a poison, but also courses through her body. Creatures that come into contact with it will begin to suffer from great stomach pain and internal bleeding, as well as bloating and hallucinations before ultimately dying. In some scenarios these spirits will appear to children who are outside at dusk and attempt to lure them away. Or entice unattended toddlers or babies to crawl toward her, in which she may feed them her milk which is equally poisonous. Ubume are like many spirits, and though they may manifest in a somewhat physical form, and their body can be destroyed, without exorcism or a way to purge the spirit, the creature will return. Because of this, though they may bleed and appear to die, they can reform, as well as possess the ability to walk through walls, fly, and even teleport as many ghosts do. There does seem to be an area or time limit to their attacks, as they will not chase a creature indefinitely usually, or may only follow a creature and attack at night or in a certain area. Some exclusions to this may be if the creature is responsible for her death, or if the creature has been cursed. On occasion, The Ubume will be created in tandem with the spirit known as a Myling, and the baby spirit will replace the egg that the Ubume often holds, causing for a team up of horrible proportions. This is not always a terrible scenario however, as there have been rare occasions in which an exorcist has brought a Myling to an Ubume and the process was able to put both the mother and child to rest.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is in fact a pregnancy Yokai. In some stories she's a bloody pregnant woman who lost her baby, and in others she's a hideous bird woman who lures away children, so I combined both stories into one concept and here we are! This one actually went though a LOT of forms before I found one I really liked. In the end it turned out pretty cool I think, and it matches my other evil spirit monsters. Expect another type of freakish pregnant creature to appear very soon.
