Also Known as a Christmas Cat, A Winterwight Stalker, A Jalakottur, A Hoarfrost Lion, A Christmas Cat, or a Frostblood Wight, Yule Cats are hideous abominations and nightmare fuel of the winter months. Similar to Mari Lwyd, Yule cats are created through a ritual that specifically binds winter spirits to a corpse to create an undead creature to do your bidding. Unlike with Mari Lwyd, it is much more of a forceful and violent endeavor. It first requires one to kill someone, and while the body is fresh, they must cut them open and place within their chest a cat. The cat must be living, but can be kept in a bag or sedated. After being placed in the chest of the corpse, the chest must be sewn shut, and the necromancer must cut themselves and feed blood to the mouth of the dead human. During the next few days, the cat will slowly die and when it does the body will begin to contort. It will become hunched as it's feet transform into large pickaxe like blades and it's hands transform into huge three fingered claws. Spines begin to jut from it's back and the human face contorts and melts as the mouth opens and the now twisted and sabertooth tiger like form of the skull emerges from the human's previous mouth. As with many necromantic creatures, they often undergo mutation, growing a bit larger, and often having large pustules, cists, or other hideous protuberances from the corrupting power of Necromancy. Yule cats are very quick, able to run at upwards of 40 miles per hour in quick bursts. Incredibly nimble in their movement, they can skitter across rooftops with very little sound, or run on walls or even ceilings. They are known for hiding above places where their quarry is going to be and to suddenly snatch them up with their large grasping claws, or impale them swiftly. The spines make attacking it from behind or above difficult, and the razor sharp claws on it's hands and feet can easily be used to pierce through flesh. They can move quickly through snow and hide in snow drifts easily, and can even manipulate wind slightly to project sounds or to do a second leap off of a pocket of wind to maneuver swiftly. Yule cats scream like mountain Lions, meaning they roar in a manner similar to that of a woman screaming in pain. Their hearing is extremely keen and they can track creatures for miles through sound alone, and they have a keen scent too that allows them to track and follow prey for long periods, especially if they were previously injured. The injuries caused by a Yule Cat bleed slowly, and begin to slowly coagulate the blood of a creature, freezing it into slush in their veins. Some have even said that if a Yule cat unleashes it's wild hoarfrost scream in someone's face, they will quickly freeze from the inside out. Even the spines on their back can afflict a creature with the primal toxin that seems to freeze them from the inside out, and on occasion they will crouch low and strike enemies with their back, shoulders, or hips to impale them. They aren't sapient, but are able to set traps, even impaling corpses on their backs and hiding in the snow to appear as if a person is hurt, mimicking the sounds of someone crying. Yule cats are used by powerful necromancers in winter seasons or arctic locations, as they are very susceptible to fire and heat, and the further from the cold they are, the less power their winter spirits possess. Some are able to enchant the iron chains that bind them with various frost magics that allow them to be maintained year round. In modern times, the Yule cat is a strange creature of folklore said to eat those who don't get new clothing for christmas, or that it will arrive to eat your christmas dinner if you are bad. These stories are told to children to scare them and likely come from old tales from when Necromancers were a much larger threat. They do of course have precedent however. In times long since passed, Necromancers would often use the long nights and inhospitable weather of the winter months to collect corpses for their dark magic, and some would use the power of a Yule Cat to do it's bidding, meaning homes would be broken into and the Yule cat may find and kill them. Sometimes Necromancers would only have them steal however and bring food and supplies back to them. Those who receive new clothing in the final months before Christmas, may pass under the radar of the Yule cat. Why it does this is unknown, but many speculate that it has to do with the fae spirit trapped within the undead, forcing it to follow some obscure fae traditions or beliefs... On occasion, Yule cats whom have been unbound by their chains, have gained a sort of sapience, with some even able to speak or harness greater versions of their powers... Other than Necromancers, they are sometimes used by witches or Hags to do their bidding, and are famously used by a type of Hag known as a Gr'yla....
