Are you familiar with options? They're contracts to buy (betting long) or sell (betting short) a particular stock. If a stock is selling for $10/share and I think it will go down in value, I buy a short option giving me the right to sell the stock at $10/share. So if the price drops to $5/share my contract allowing me to sell at $10/share is now valuable. So that's what I sell: the contract. The option. The short. Because it's very valuable to people who own that stock.
