The lesson is that the things politicians do and the policies they fight for have nothing to do with what's best for America or what's best for the people or even what makes the most sense. What they do is only understandable when you recognize that the thing that drives their choices is what's best for them. Politicians make choices based on what advances their career and their ambitions and that's all.
