I think the aliens were doing whatever they were doing when the humans showed up. Much like finding an injured bird and putting a blanket in a box for it, the aliens created a planet. It didn't work out, the humans who stayed were academics with zero survival skills, so they all died. When the aliens checked on them again they used abilities we don't understand to allow them to say goodbye. Something like that.
