Stargate Universe S1E1

AIR ( PART 1 )

Comments

I'm only a few minutes in and I'm already getting a kick out of the reaction. All the stuff long time viewers took for granted, oh man. Going into it as someone who watched the film and 200+ episodes of TV it never occurred to me that there is so much going on that they don't have any chance to explain to new viewers. 7 chevron gate addresses are like phone numbers for planets made with symbols on the gate and dialling devices. The 8th chevron is like an international code for galaxies.

I love the opening, especially from a screenwriter point of view. Deep space. A huge ship appears. We go inside and it seems abandoned. Stargate activates and a very confused soldier comes through, followed by a lot of other people. What a great hook! Of course you want to know what's going on. Such a great illustration of rule #1: Show don't tell.

I've got nothing against the other shows or the movie, but SGU is my favorite. And I do believe it stands alone quite well, largely because of the excellent writing.

The chevrons are constellations. You need a minimum of 7 chevrons to connect to another Stargate: six to determine your destination and the 7th to indicate your point of origin. Later they discovered that 8 chevron addresses would take you to another galaxy. Then they discovered a 9 chevron address in the Ancient database (the Ancients built the Stargate network a very long time ago). There was no context, no clue as to where the 9 chevron address goes. All they knew was that it took a huge amount of power, which the core of that unstable planet provided.

Sweet!

I'm assuming that this is a sponsored show and that the sponsor either doesn't favour the 15 seasons of the other two shows that predate this spin off. Or, of course didn't wish to committ to the entire run. Which is entirely understandable, as that's a lot of episodes. Perhaps also feeling that this stands more rightly on its own for the large majority of the time. Any call backs can be explained. I watched the opening before this message. But apologies if you later go on to explain this. Edit after viewing: So, yeah as a big Gater, watching you experience portions of this with less context, is a little deflating honestly. But that'll fade a little as it finds its own footing. The largest amount of callbacks will always be in the pilot. Arguably this maybe wasn't recieved as well as the other shows in the franchise. But massively because it is different in a number of ways. Perhaps not having that comparison will be helpful as a new viewer.
