I think the connection that Nilsen is suggesting he's made. By which we understand from the various conversations he has with the police officers and Brian Masters. Would be a sense abandonment, and how that has been tied to imaginary of death. Seeking to possess and have control over those that leave him. Death is the natural and inevitable conclusion to his relationships. Not having the concept and information of the death of his grandfather explained to him, as a child in that traumatic moment. But having that experience tied to sleep and rest, he indicates that developed into a fascination with imitating that state as a way of understanding it. He exerts the control he doesn't have by killing. Then relives elements of the origins of those feelings he's had over death and the dead. He chooses those he wishes to be close to. 'His type' then he kills them before they have the opportunity to, or attempt to, leave him. So he had control over the situation he has no control over. I'd say that's maybe a certain degree of comprehension. But burgeoning on some understanding without identifying with those connections that have been warped.
