True Detective S1E3

THE LOCKED ROOM

Comments

I feel I could write an essay on this one. Rust makes very some interesting delineations about religion and morality. Which on the suface makes a lot of sense. But in some ways, there's a deeper complexity to the idea of a moral code. The basis of the statement is that one shouldn't rely solely on devine retribution to keep them from doing the horrible things that humanity is capable of. To believe that is what guides them, makes that person inherently bad. But no one is born with a conscious or a set of principles, they are a product of our environment. And unfortunately there is no rational way of arguing that we can separate them out from the influences that divine teachings have helped to shape elements of that collective thinking. Doing or not doing something because you know where you or society has drawn that line. Or because by the guidance set out in historical divine teachings, that are more narrowly foisted upon you. Aren't we all basically singing from the same hymn sheet, if you pardon that intentional usage there. There's something fascinating about Rust's portrayal and demeanour. Perhaps more notable if he weren't paired with some one so comparatively outwardly brash, indefensible, unapologetic and uncomfortably defensive. And like you say, less enthusiastic about solving the case. He goes with the flow a little easier against Rust's instinct to rail against authority. You noticed the detectives were asking Marty about Rust and the case. But Rust only about the case. He's all to happy to segway into his perspectives on a number of things as well.
