The family, the shrine maidens seem to all have something in common which is having dreams of another life, we heard at least 3 generations. There were photos shown of previous generations. Also the cycle of that comet was 1200 years and the shrine is at least that old. If... there were unnatural events that occurred at that time, what if they erased themselves so that there would be nothing supernatural left, no evidence, everything comes back to normal. The only thing lingering was a feeling of having lost something and so they search for a place or for someone that they couldn't possibly know. I think it's about that feeling of inexplicable loss or longing.
