Ortega is an interesting character - more layered than perhaps she first appears. She's also trapped between her mother's belief systems and her instincts as a cop. She pays for Riker's birth sleeve mortgage when he could just as easily be resleeved, but still believes that damage to society caused by unsolved murders outweighs the personal religious freedoms of neo-catholics.
