The asteroids are covered in stealth tech, they can’t search for them or track them. But, when they get close to earth the shield can uncover stealth, because Avasarala had them link it to the asteroid watchtower, it can now defend the earth again and stop them. That’s what you saw, it basically breaks the asteroid up into smaller particles that burn up as it enters the atmosphere. Some of the dumb choices, are just dumb choices the characters made that always makes you want to just shake them (Fred always thought he couldn’t be outsmarted.) I personally didn’t even think about grabbing Saki (the belter) instead of trying to stop the robot thing, so I can’t fault Holden. And Naomi has always been stubborn, remember how hard headed she was about not being able to handle gravity on Ilus? Unfortunately, this time it’s costing her way more than she ever could have imagined.
