Your thoughts on female minis? + Nejavina freebie in your Library!

About a year ago, Lyla from The Mini Witch YouTube channel made a video about something I've always considered important when designing female models. That they are important parts of the story, capable of changing fates equally to men.  I think you can clearly see that in our collection, be it elven rangers, shieldmaidens or southerner archers.

In my opinion, women in the best fantasy novel we all love and respect here are like this. They can handle epic challenges no man could kill πŸ˜„

What are your thoughts about the topic? Have you struggled with finding such miniatures yourself?

Speaking as a male, I have seen what you have described Kris and have stood up against it. Gaming is a hobby for any geek regardless of gender, colour or sexual orientation. my only rule as GM is be nice and respectful and have fun. Anyone having a problem with that is out the door... my One ring group at the minute has three males, me and my two mates, my eldest who is non binary and my other friend who is female, my middle daughter is wanting to get into gaming too, I was pleased to hear that the school D&D group is run by a female teacher. sadly gaming is still a male dominated hobby, not sure why... i suppose it is like horse riding, mainly female dominated...in that one I am in the minority on Shetland :) Apologies for the rambling stream of consciousness, i think the Codine is kicking in.

As I have probably said before, I love the One Ring RPG and this is why I am here on the Patreon from the start. These miniatures are Tolkien as far as I am concerned. now the original illustrator was Jon Hodgson for the rules and he had female armour spot on - as do you on here. elves and Rohan have proper attired ladies...Ladies going in to battle with enough chain mail to make a small handkerchief would last about 10 seconds in reality. So yes indeed finding suitable miniatures for female characters has been difficult.

I hope my tone wasn't bitter. It wasn't intended to be. But... I did hit the WTF age about 20 years ago. I just don't put with (bleep) any more. And this subject tends to turn my polite filter off. And I do feel safe here. Otherwise I wouldn't have posted. It's just sad/depressing that a younger generation is having to fight the same fight their mothers and grandmothers fought. Kris

Hello Kristin! First and foremost - I want you to know that no one will throw anything at you here. I mean, one can try but we create a space that's open for different points of view as long as they remain respectful. As a woman, I sympathise with you fully, as I have had a similar experience. I'm sorry that you felt rejected and discriminated, and I think that it shouldn't ever look this way. Luckily there are groups and places where you are always welcome and TPGEO is one of these. I know it's just the beginning for the bigger upcoming changes but I think it's great that they're coming! Thanks a lot for being with us and supporting DnD is a Woman project! Spreading good word and comments mean a lot for us ❀️ - Kharie

Stepping up on soap box. (Please don't throw things). I was going to write something about being a female FRPG GM/player for the last 40 years and how it has marginally gotten better since the early 80s. And then I thought about it. Nope. Not better. Women are just starting to fight back. Try selling a gaming system or module under a female name. Rejected. Make the name masculine and the same submission is sold. For figs, I don't paint leg skin. I make them skin tight pants. Yep. I don't like the neckline then I paint a top on them. And I'm very glad to say I've never had to do this with one of TPGEOs figs. But it happens way too often. Discrimination is rife in gaming. And it's not just against women, but also people of color. Even in big cities. And especially at gaming conventions. I walk into one of them and get looked at like I'm a talking dog -- or someone's mother. I for one am glad the younger generation is speaking out. It's time the world accepted 1) that gaming is a legitimate hobby and not a perversion; 2) women are intelligent and creative; and 3) that a person should be defined not by how they look but their words and actions. Stepping off soap box. You may now proceed to throw things at me. (And I'm sure someone will).

I'm with you on this, especially the family side of things!

Thank you for your support for the idea! P.S. One of them actually was female (in chapter 20)!

I'm glad to see more folks producing minis of women that aren't weirdly sexualised. I'll admit, I was a wee bit disappointed to see that none of the human rangers were women, but I'm glad TPGEO is actively exploring the space of realistic, grounded women minis, and I'm hopeful for the future! It's certainly one of the reasons I continue to subscribe to this patreon.

I really respect designers who don’t go down the β€œnsfw for the sake of it” route. Those that help move the narrative away from over sexualisation of females are the sorts of people I’m happy to support and to share their art with my family

Solinity

I would love to see variety in body size and type! It's honestly why I love dwarves, they're more chonky.

Spruce & Squirrel

I love what you are doing with these.

Bottles, Boards, and Bits

That's it exactly, you would not expect elite fighters ti be rotund unless they were Lords or Ladies, but a mage far too used to sitting, reading and eating may have a few more layers. That does not make them.less potent at their job mind. I'm excited by a project like this, it will be very interesting to see what can be produced. 5e is a vast game with incredible variety of races and classes and I would love to seem them in full technicolour. I mostly look forward to your Tieflings to stay away from the obvious trope of "well their have fiend so lets make them like a succubus" crap, sick to the teeth with it

Aaron Emerson

I like them, as I usually like all the figures you make. And thank you for the monster hunter a female version would be epic

Darren

Peter jackson verson of Eowyn is the Cause of my favorite scene in that whole trilogy, so that covers my thoughts

100%! As for those here, those were the first completed that found their way to the render pic ;) We've got more in other body types, considering their background (someone doing adventuring for a long time may find it hard to have extra fat to spare, but a brawler type can be more bulky for sure, as well as a mage focused on study not errands).

That's absolutely true! It's just sometimes executed in a way which could be less "in your face". Teasing, rather than giving things straight on the plate!

Thank you! I hope the rest of the lineup will also be to your liking!

However, the "wench" or tavern maid has been overly sexualised for too long as have all aspects of fantasy female characters. I get the witch magically making herself look more beuatiful but that doesn't mean sje is in a thigh slit dress showing off the side of her butt cheek. I would love to see more realistic aspects of such creatures and characters. There are some fantastic examples out there. I mean, why do they all have to be skinny? Why not a little fat? Why does every fighter or mage or cleric have to be model thin? Mix it up a little, same for men too

Aaron Emerson

There is a time and a place for sexualised versions of characters, those times and places and based on what the character represents. The same can be said for males too. Certain lore would charterise the succubus as a sexualised object perverted by fiendish features, same goes the Incubus.

Aaron Emerson

Realistic poses, appropriate clothing, real armor not chainmail bikinis. Adolescents should not lead the design team. I love what you have here!
