While thumbnailing doesn’t look very significant, and there isn’t much to look at once you zoom in, its actually a very important part of the comic process. By sketching out page formats on such a tiny scale, this allows me to keep an eye on the overall picture and readability that I am assembling. It makes it easier for me to see the flow and continuity of the story, as well as keep track of the pacing.
Something very important to note while thumbnailing is that it makes you take a step back and think about how you want to present a certain interaction, and how much weight and significance you want it to have. It’s a lot to keep track of! This is essentially the groundwork of 32 pages. Even though some things will undoubtedly change in the final draft, this is where the bare bones are. It’s also, in my opinion, the most difficult stage and the most time-consuming!
