Update on my 'Notel' comic: the town without television

Hi Patreon supporters,

It's been a couple of months between posts, so I thought I'd update you on what I have been working on lately.

Notel comic
In short, I have been completing pages of my comic Notel, which I will release in early 2020. This is my comic about the town that didn't get television until 21 years after the rest of North America, and the psychologists who studied the 'before' and 'after' effects of television on the community.

Those who have been supporting my work for a while will remember that I published an early excerpt of Notel in late 2017. Unfortunately, I then got busy working on other projects, and still have the story hanging on a cliffhanger on my website.

I am in the process of drawing the artwork using the 'monochrome + limited colour' approach that I used with recent comics like Racist, Baseball, and Dumbwaiter

If I'm honest, I think that the original 2017-era Notel comic excerpt was a little rushed, as I was trying to publish that comic before heading on Christmas holiday. This time, I will make sure I get the artwork right before publishing. And I will go back and tweak the earlier artwork when I am done with the newer pages.

Examples pages of Notel

For context, here is a look at two six-page artwork spreads that I completed recently:

(Obviously, you'll need to zoom in if you want to read the text of those spreads!)

Status of Notel project

I currently have 36 new pages of Notel completed. As well as drawing new artwork, I am going to go back and revise the artwork of my previously-published excerpt, so that it fits with the art style of the new pages.

For those who like my 'science communication' -style comics (Rat Park, Deviance in the Dark, etc), I think Notel will be a real treat for you

Thanks for your support!
Patreon supporters: I really appreciate your long-term support, as I complete this Notel project! Thank you for generously supporting my work with your hard-earned money!

This is the definition of a slow-burn, longer-term project that is perfectly suited to your month-by-month patronage. I appreciate that you are so willing to support the day-by-day work that feeds into a substantive comic of this sort.

The big payoff will be when all ~200 pages are available for you to read. But I'll be sure to share excerpts along the way, so you can see how things are evolving.

Bye for now,
