Alec's SDR Surgery

Howdy everyone! I've got a few announcements to make. As of the end of October, I'll be going on sabbatical for a few months.  I'll still be working during this time but most of the work will be non-comics behind-the-scenes stuff. I may still post comics occasionally.

The reason for this is that on November 1, our son Alec will be undergoing a life-changing surgery called SDR to overcome his cerebral palsy.  Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy is a permanent procedure where defective nerves are cut to restore mobility and prevent ongoing degradation.

This is a big step for us but we've been researching this for a year and we think this is his best option for the best possible life.

After the surgery Alec will be in intensive physical therapy for a year or more while he learns to use his "new legs". Taking a sabbatical will allow me to chaperone Alec to his therapy appointments and focus on helping him recover.

While we have medical insurance through Amy's job, they will not cover the needed therapy. We'll be having to pay out of pocket for it all.

We're also going to have travel and other costs, and I'm likely to lose income during this time.  So we're raising money to help cover the medical costs for our son Alec's SDR spinal surgery.

I'll definitely still have time to do the Patreon bonus comics and other goodies, but all other comics will be severely curtailed. I have been considering suspending the Patreon until I'm back full-time (and you're more than welcome to suspend your donations yourself), but I wanted to know what you folks thought first. Any suggestions and feedback are appreciated.

Doesn't sound like the time to suspend the patreon to me. Like those above, I'm happy to continue with my small amount. Thanks for all the comics all these years!

I'm happy to keep giving my little amount every month. Consider it catch-up pay for the couple of years of reading Goats and SFAM without contributing. Or just take the money and don't think about it. It's all good man, I hope things go well for him and all of you!

Speaking for myself and the small amount I'm contributing, I'll be more than happy to keep it up. All the best for you and your family, and enjoy the time with your son.

It's not even a question. Keep patreon up. Hugs to your whole family. We're rooting for you, Alec!

Jon Guyer

Definitely keep the Patreon up.

Good lord. Just dropped in to say please do keep the Patreon going. This is exactly the kind of thing it is for. Life shit. Which happens. That isn't going to change my wish to support your work long-term - which is what Patreon is about - and since right now I happen to be lucky enough to be able to do so in some tiny way, I am. Wishing you and family, and particularly Alec, all good luck and good things over the coming scary-difficult year and beyond.

My pledges will continue. Take care of your family, let us know how things are going now and again. Hopefully it all goes as smoothly as possible.

Phillip Thomas

Grace to you and yours; we are here for you, as best as we can be.

Trey

Keep the Patreon up. Anyone who wants to quit can quit, but the rest of us want to keep helping you out a little.

Alex White

I'd like to keep giving through Patreon while you're on sabbatical.
