In my experience, there are two explanations: 1) their personalities were severely incompatible, or 2) they are not reliable historians (e.g., they actually did experience difficulty, but don't story their life that way). It's usually #2. One can be emotionally neglected in a loving family - this happens frequently among people of NW European decent and from East Asia.
