The Psychology of Roseanne Barr

Comments

As bad as some of her behavior has been, when I think about Roseanne I don't feel anger, I just feel sad. Her whole persona is based on crossing the line of what is traditionally acceptable which has been a double edged sword. I won't make excuses for the tweet. It was extremely racist, but as with most of her public scandals I find the outrage to be deeply disingenuous and insincere which ultimately upsets me more than any bad behavior on her part. She's played the role of whipping boy so often I don't think she knows how to do anything else. I've talked often about Louis-Ferdinand Celine being one of my favorite authors in spite of the viciously anti-semetic pamphlets he authored in the runup to WWII. I think the reason the French have such a problem with him today is that he reminds them of things they want to forget, first and foremost that anti-semitism in France in the 30s was totally ordinary. It was not fringe, it was the default position. To hear a lot of people tell it now, everyone was either in the resistance or secretly opposed to the Vichy government.
