Hack Therapists

What are some amateurish things that therapists say? (e.g., right-brain, left-brain)

Comments

Yes. I'm starting to realize that too. Two tips: 1) ask around and 2) give a therapist 3 sessions to see if they're a good match, and move on to the next one if they aren't.

this kinda stuff makes me very apprehensive about the idea of finding a therapist. There seems to be quite a lot of very bad ones, which doesn't surprise me given the types of people I generally encounter in life with interest in the field of psychology - usually some very messed up people. Not that messed up people can't be good therapists, but geez... it seems so common that I worry about less intelligent/more gullible friends seeing bad therapists and not having the ability to recognize their BS, and instead being harmed further by said therapist

This is a psychiatrist, but when I was 15 or 16, I was hospitalized for self harm behavior. In a meeting with the psychiatrist he started reading my diary entries which I assume my parents provided him. It felt like a big violation and I was upset, his response “when you try to hurt yourself you lose your right to privacy”. It was a bad experience and felt very hurtful I admit I was a difficult client when I was young, it stemmed from a place of deep suffering and personality issues, but I also had a group therapist yell at me to “stop making everything about you” Additionally having another therapist make sexual comments about my body. I never went back after that session but I wish I had reported him
