I really love this episode. My current supervisor, who is psychodynamic, told me that self disclosing my feelings in the session was counter transference and must be worked on outside of the therapeutic relationship. I agree in some instances, but I have had great experiences in the past sharing my emotional experience with the client, whether it be feeling very sad at the talk of grief or telling the client I feel irritated or tired or whatever in response to a particular incident. in some circumstances. I think the client picks up on the therapists energy, and to not bring it into the room, can make the client feel confused, judged or crazy. I don’t always self disclose my emotions, but I have seen how it can be a powerful intervention and good modeling of communication. I also see how it can address projective identification. How can we as therapists tell the difference between projective identification and countertransference? If it is countertransference, is it always a mistake to share with the client ?
