I didn't have nearly the visceral negative reaction to Voyeur that you did. Whatever you think of the guy, even if you hate his guts, you have to admit it's a hell of a story. I agree that Talese let him off the hook, which in many ways points out the folly of the whole sexual revolution/free love movement with whom Talese tried to associate himself. In plenty of cases it became a a way to excuse behavior which shouldn't have been acceptable. We tend to want contradictory things, open and free sexuality if taken far enough ends up in places like this. The end of that road, now as much as two centuries ago, heads toward the Marquis De Sade. Adorno and Horkheimer's "Dialectic of Enlightenment" contains a long section on Sade titled "Juliette: Or Enlightenment and Morality." It's a crude oversimplification, but the major theme of the work is to show the dialectical relationship between enlightenment and barbarism and how in some sense they contain and rely on one another. It always stuck with me.
