I have Addison's disease where I can not produce cortisol. Since I have to replace it manually with steroids, how I think about the function of cortisol is when your body is under a lot of stress, it releases cortisol to prevent the stress from messing with your physiological processes. Cortisol is one of the most vital hormones and without it, your blood pressure, glucose, and countless other processes would be knocked out of homeostasis anytime we are under stress. I have had people think that since I can not make cortisol, I would just never feel stressed/get stressed out without the hormone replacement. Instead, I would feel terribly stressed/die as I would not have cortisol to manage the demand that stress puts on our bodies. Cortisol itself is not what "stresses" you; Instead, people become very stressed, and the body releases high amounts of cortisol to maintain your bodily functions that stress would throw off. For example, in a time of very high stress, like a car accident, your body has to releases a ton of cortisol to cope, and I would need a very high emergency dose of corticosteroids otherwise my body would start failing. Nonetheless, if someone is under high stress a lot, these high amounts of cortisol over time have very negative side effects. Your biology is right; in the morning, your body creates the most cortisol to prepare your body to handle the stress you deal with in the day and levels decrease as you prepare to sleep. Thanks so much for sharing research pertaining to cortisol!
