This was very helpful for me. I have a bachelors degree in English, and I've been working in a career that I don't particularly enjoy for over a decade now and really want to go back to school so I can pursue something more meaningful. I want to study adolescent psychology so I can work with teenagers. My therapist ironically was the one who gave me the idea, and it really clicked with me. I've always been interested in psychology, and it was one of the areas I wanted to major in back when I was in school. However, because I'm now over 40, I wasn't sure if going back to get my masters was going to be worth it. I am worried about finances, how long it will take to pay off debt, etc. Also, when I went to my husband with my idea he wasn't very supportive. It was helpful to hear that if I went back to school I probably wouldn't be alone among my age group. I'm going to really start researching it I think. Thanks for the encouragement.

I am a teacher. I remember one year I was working as a school librarian in a really rough Title 1 school. There was a teacher shortage in my state so they were certifying teachers right after graduation without any type of student teaching experience. We got a new Kindergarten teacher who was such a person. At about 11:00 he brought his kids to me for an hour (I was part of the “specials” rotation). He never picked them up. As we saw on the security cameras later, he dropped them off with me-completed the lap around the school to the front doors, got in his car and left. Never returned. I do believe their are certain careers that one can just be not right for…no matter how much they want it or how much money and time they spent. Thank goodness for these internship periods. Side note- as a 42 year old who still gets carded for alcohol…I feel you on that. It is super frustrating, especially as a female because female teachers tend to behave very hierarchically. I often throw in things about my age or how long I’ve been teaching to avoid this.

I'm 25 and have hit this roadblock in the medical field. Now that I've done it for the last 7 years in some capacity, I have more confidence. Problem is I've always looked like I was 12 until I hit my early 20s🤣
