"Hey Carly, you got any leads on a new roommate?" Deborah asked from across the kitchen. Seated at the table, she was reading the news on her phone, idly playing with her black hair, done up tightly in a ponytail.
"A couple. Seems like a big hassle to me, though." Carly rummaged through the shelves, looking for something to eat. Her long blonde hair, reaching to her shoulders, bobbed up and down as she felt around. "So what if we got an extra room? It's good for storage."
"Rent keeps going up." Deborah explained, her eyebrows furrowing. "It'll help with the bills."
"Yeaaaah, but..." Carly paused, leaning back. She yawned, her jaw practically dislocating as her mouth stretched wide open; raising her arms above her head, she stretched, her body letting out a relaxing, rubbery squeak. As she lowered her arms and landed on the soles of her feet, she smacked her lips, her noodly arms drooping to her sides.
"Won't it make it weird?" Carly scratched her neck. "Seeing as we're stretchy and all. It's easier when it's just the two of us."
"Yeah well, it's better having a roof over our heads." Deborah groaned. "Whoever we pick, they'll catch up in a hurry."
"Awww, but I like cutting loose around the house..." Carly whined, digging back into the cupboard, pulling out a brown cereal box. It was adorned with the visage of a cartoon red panda...
"How much do you spend on cereal?" Deborah raised her head. "It's like, pure sugar, y'know."
"Nuh uh! It's Peanut Chocs! Part of a balanced breakfast!" She spun the box in her hands. "Infused with minerals too!"
"I mean, I never see you eat that with any fruit on hand." Deborah added. rolling her eyes. "We could be saving a bit of extra cash if you went with something offbrand like-"
"C'moooooon, don't knock it 'til you try it!" Carly beamed, her arms stretching to present the box to Deborah... maybe with a touch too much enthusiasm, as the motion ended up pressing the box into Deborah's face, flattening her already flat expression; Deborah continued to wear the same, unimpressed look, even as her face peeled off like clay.
"I don't want any." Deborah stated matter-of-factly, massaging her cheeks. Even as Carly cheekily prodded the corner into her cheek.
"C'mon, you remember what Corporal Butters says! 'There's peanut-butter-and-chocolate-y goodness in every bite! You'll go Nutty for Peanut Chocs! Registered trademark!'" Her voice lowered into a playful staccato, waving the box back and forth as if the character on the front was dancing along with her.
"Oh hey, I figured out what's wrong with you!" Deborah pushed the box away again. "Years of sugar overdoses, coupled with the psychic damage of accompanying Saturday morning advertisements, causing irreparable brain damage!~"
"What, no! Maybe?" Carly pouted initially, but upon further considering, tapped her chin. "I'unno... more damage than getting turned into putty?"
Deborah paused. Her eyes lowered in thought. She let out a noncommittal grunt, and returned to her coffee.
"C'moooooooon, try it!" Carly flexed her finger, forming it into a makeshift spoon; with her other hand, she wrenched Deborah's jaw wide open and tossed it into her gaping maw, as if she were shoveling dirt into a hole! Deborah's jaw snapped shut, her teeth crunching the sacharrinely sugary substance into a fine paste.
"Rggh, Carly..." Deborah growled. "You're gonna throw off my whole diet with this... this... um...?"
Deborah's eyes widened, as did her irises. The influx of sugary compound eagerly melted into her amorphous body's composition; it was easy for the things she ate to incorporate such things. She hadn't so much as glanced at a doughnut for years, so a spoonful of concentrated sugar was enough to get her really revved up.
With so much energy bouncing around inside of her, she began to elongate, limbs rocketing in disparate directions; her head, dizzy and swirling, began to spin atop a rapidly elongating neck! From her rapidly swelling diaphragm she let out a strange whooping noise, as if getting hyped for a concert.
"Wowowowow...!" Deborah, at a loss for words, kicked her legs! Carly staggered back, astonished at Deborah's strange, overexcited response, gawking as Deborah's elasticine body seemed eager to flex about the room.
Her limbs snapped back into regular proportions as she stood up straight, before bending over in a wide, perfectly curved 180 degree arc, looking all the part of a human slinky, as she bounced along the floor, whooping excitedly all the while. Carly covered her mouth to let out a chuckle at Deborah's strange, cartoonish display.
...Her suppressed chuckle erupted into full-blown laughter as Deborah blurted "I'M NUTTY FOR PEANUT CHOCS!~" in a high-pitched squeak.
"Hehe, you must really be into it!" Carly beamed. She raised the box, shaking a couple handfuls of the cereal into her outstretched mouth, eager to join her roomie in this weird display, a ritual performed in the celebration of commodification.
Boingoingong! Carly straightened out in turn, bouncing around the kitchen after Deborah like a slinky before catching up to her, pouncing on her in a spring-loaded leap! Deborah let out a whoop of excitement as their bodies curled around each other like a double helix; their misshapen bodies clutching tightly together, they wrapped around each other, pressing into each other until they resembled a rubber ball, streaked with different skintones, like looking into a mocha coffee beverage.
With a bounce and a bound, they ricocheted all around the room, colliding with the stove, the pantry, the dishwasher... they slammed against the cabinets, rattling the dishes within as they bounded out of the kitchen and through the rest of the apartment, colliding with everything in sight, their excitable whooping joining in a chorus of excitement.
"I'M NUTTY FOR PEANUT CHOCS!~" They blurted again in unison, voice-boxes high-pitched, warbled and squeaking.
Kthunk. It was only when the two girls, bound together in their rubber ball form, got wedged underneath the bedframe, that they started to calm down slightly. The ball warbled, squeaking idly.
"Wh-what the heck was that...?" Deborah's voice came through clearly, though from where it wasn't clear.
"That was you going Nutty for Peanut Chocs!" Carly explained excitedly.
"Why are we merged together?" Deborah muttered.
"It was fun! Nutty even!" Carly clarified further with an earnest chuckle.
"Stop saying that word..." Deborah sighed. "Can you get off of me?"
"You're on top of me, silly!" Carly cackled, the rubber ball warbling.
The two girls were... eccentric, in their own way. But they seemed to be a good fit for each other's quirks. Finding a third roommate that could add to their dynamic was going to be harder than expected...
